hi - i'm in the process of changing my water pump / thermostat and hoses. i've got the water pump & housing off of the car this morning. i'm tyring to seperate the water pump from the housing. any tips on how to do this would be great. thks in advance jason
Ok sorry but my crystal ball is down for cleaning so can you tell us the year , model , type of car (we assume Fcar) just so we can give you some feedback.
I usually leave the housing attached to the enginen & just pull the front nose off. However, since you've got the whole thing out,I'll assume that you've already removed the bolts & nuts attaching the WP nose to the housing. At this point all that's holding them together is the gasket, and the alignment sleeves on the studs. First try putting the nuts on until they're flush with the ends of the studs. Then gently tap on them with a plastic or brass faced hammer. Should pop it apart. Don't tap hard enough to damage the threads tho. If not, then cut a slim wedge from a piece of hardwood (oak or maple work well) & drive it into the gasketed joint. In a pinch I've used door shims as wedges, but being softwood they break up pretty easily so you may go thru a few of them.
Screw all that - send the whole unit in to Kermitt at Durable1. For roughly $400, he'll sandblast the whole thing, disassemble it, rebuild the water pump, bench-test the thermostat to make sure its within spec, port the assembly so that the coolant flows better, replace all gaskets/seals/bearings/hardware, refinish the housing, and ship it back to you completely assembled and ready to install in the car.
Hi, When I took the pump off there were 4 bolts which go through the pump and through the housing into the block. There were also 3 nuts which attach to studs to hold the pump against the housing. I removed them also. When I pulled the pump out, the nose wasn't coming off. I don't really see how this would work, as the housing is no longer connected to the block. If you pull, the whole thing is going to (and did !) come out - unless I'm missing something.... The pump and housing seem to be sealed tight. I can't really see jaming wedges in there, as there is not a crack to wedge them into. I tried a piece of wood through the hole in the back, and tapping (and wacking) it with a rubber mallet. That didn't work either. Hmmm. I think I'll soak it in WD-40, and see if that eases things up a little. Unless anyone has a better suggestion. Jason PS - I already have got all the parts for pump / thermostat etc, so I can't send it to Durable1 (unless I sent them all the parts also)
