Hey all, looking for some advice on installing a water pump on a 85 308 QV. Should I use some sort of RTV sealant on the gasket surfaces between the pump and housing, or will the gasket alone be sufficient?

Also, do I need to use thread sealer on the 3 bolts that attach the pump to the block? Do they pass through a water passage when seated?

    Thanks, Brett

You'll get a myriad of opinions on the subject of gaskets and sealers. My advice is do what you are most comfortable and confident with.

Me... I don't like to chance leaks. I use the gray silicone you buy at Ford for their diesel oil pans. With a gob between my thumb and index finger, I smear both sides of the gasket lightly before assembling anything that might leak. I hate fighting out corroded bolts so I used liquid Teflon thread sealer on the bolts in question.

I checked with the gasket manufacturer - no sealant.
And my '83 is not leaking any antifreeze

As Rick said, you'll get all kinds of opinions on this one.

My preferred method is a very thin skim of Permatex aviation form-a-gasket on the WP side only (nothing on the block side). The next time you have to replace the WP the gasket will come off clean off the block and then you just have to carefully clean off the face of the WP to replace, but of course, you'll likely be giving that WP up on exchange for a replacement...so somebody else can deal with scraping off the gasket!

Never had a leak using form-a-gasket.

    Good luck!
