Hi, I am coming up the major engine-out belt service on my 1990 Testarossa soon & have been reading a lot of the comments on the forum to familiarise myself with things before I talk to my mechanic & book it in.
I believe I have a slight oil weep from the water pump, is it advisable to replace the water pump (it is probably original) whilst the engine is out? This appears to be much more complex than the belt replacement as it looks like you wouyld have to drop the gearbox, etc - is this correct?
Or is there some easier maintenance thing you could do from the front?
For example, I was reading about the water pump seal (part number 183759 for my engine) but not sure if this will solve the oil weep.
Ultimately I will leave it to my mechanic, but would appreciate any thoughts, comments & suggestions.
    Cheers,
    Gary.

Much of the water pump, water pump seal, and oil seal can be replaced without serious engine disassembly. Replacing the outer bearing is probably doable (but not an easy slam dunk), but replacing the inner bearing does require some serious disassembly -- however, the TR water pump bearings are in a very good design situation (in the engine oil bath so always well flushed with fresh lubricant and no overhung load with the chain drive sprocket nearly centered between the bearings). See Fig 11 on page C14 of the TR WSM -- if you've got engine oil coming out the water pump drain duct, C, you certainly need a new oil seal, 3, but no need to replace the bearings unless they have a problem.

The pump has two seals with a weep hole between them to drain any leakage. If the hole is draining oil, the rear seal is leaking. It holds back ‘splash’ oil rather than pressurized oil. It will weep rather than squirt.

Yes - engine out to replace the seals. Worst case scenario, the sleeve which rides inside of both seals may need to be replaced if it shows excess wear. Unlikely. Inexpensive if required. Highly unlikely that the bearing needs to be replaced because it is weeping oil.

Overall, not a big deal if you are already replacing belts. Many (including myself) have had difficulty getting the seal in and watertight. Personlly, I would NEVER reinstall the engine without first doing a hydrotest while the engine was on the shop floor. The professionals likely say different.

If it is weeping oil or coolant - you REALLY need to fix it while the engine is out.

Sleeve replacement is usually ore a matter of damage removing it from the coolant seal. Be careful and they can typically be reused.
