$199 isn't a bad price IF it were a large bearing pump with the newer seal design.
Since it was yanked before I could see it I don't know what it was.

Agreed but the parts cost more than that.

I was wrong the BIN price is $220. The latest and greatest 1 piece seal is still more than that by itself. These must be built with the cheapest parts they can get and I don't think it worth the time to install unless you give yourself a fighting chance to have a good pump. After all what good is a car, any car unless you can rely on it.

Also I can't imagine why they would offer a small bearing pump. Even the dual air pump cars with the special pulley can easily be upgraded with the large bearing pump. Using early pumps is just asking for breakdowns.

The large bearing pumps directly replace the older small bearing pump & the beefier bearings are worth it. If at all possible get a large bearing pump.

However, I sure would like to know what the construction differences between the expensive 'new style' seal and industry standard shaft seals (eg: Pac-Seal #16 or Pac-Seal #68) that fit these water pumps are. After all, the original WPs seem to have lasted fine for 15-20 years without the big$$ seals.

I've never seen a new-style seal, or even pictures.

I've successfully rebuilt water pumps using both the std ferrari seals, and the industry std ones that interchange with them. So far they've been going fine for several years. Admittedly, my sample is relatively small.

BTW, here's a fairly recent related thread on WP seals:

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34538&highlight=piece+water+pump+seal

    While I replaced the seal in question with a McMaster-Carr #409 (Pac-Seal style 68 equivalent). I believe that the seal I replaced was a Pac-Seal #16 equivalent.

The parts cost to rebuild a WP using std stainless steel bearings & seals is about $125 - $150. OEM bearings, seals, etc. cost a little more. If you're set up for production, & get volume discounts, then an exchange price of $220 is a reasonable ballpark.

There are a lot of WP rebuild threads in the archives, search the body of texts for 'water pump' and 'seal' in both the current and old fchats.
