Okay, just got car back a week ago. I've driven it about 100 or so miles since then. I took it out for a drive with a little lunch time traffic and notice the water temperature steadily going up and up just pass the redline and back down hovering before redline. I notice the fan kicks in. My wife did notice a burning smell, but I didn't. I quickly took a pic with my camera phone and turn it around and park it back into my garage.

I've read mostly all threads regarding overheating and water temperature issues. There are only a few areas that cover most of cooling issues, water pump, clog hoses, thermostat, and radiator.

I have read that the water temperature with not harm the engine as it mostly like a T-Stat problem. My question is that can I drive about 20 miles to my mechanic or just tow it to be safe? What are my risks?

Need more information. What was the ambient temperature, what is the normal temperature range for your car, did you check the coolant level, any water leaks under the car, what was it in the shop for, what was done.?

I'm assuming it was in a shop because you said you just got it back.

Can you drive it? depends on your answers but probably not a good idea.

What are your risks? Blown head gaskets, warped heads, etc. That red line is there for a reason.

I just brought my car (97 456 GTA) a few months ago and it was sitting at that dealer shop getting things sorted (Dash recovered from shrinkage, windows repaired) out. I don't know enough of this car to see what's really going on. It has a good service history behind it. I remember the shop record showed the radiator has been repair before.
Today's weather was in the low 60's. I think my normal temperature range should be in 190 or lower during my limited use. I look under the car and in the ground after I parked it and it was clean. I don't see any leaks. I will check tomorrow morning and also the coolant level.

I guess my best bet is to tow it back and let them fix it. After months of waiting and finally get to have some seat time with the car, it's sad to see it going back to the shop.

Are both fans kicking in? Have you checked the water level? First things first...

Ask your wife if the smell was like burning hair. That could be water dripping from the plenum hoses into the space between the banks, and then onto the exhausts. The coolant evaporates giving off a smell of singed hair.

Could also be a faulty thermostat or bad temperature sensors under the plenum.

    Good luck!

Okay, when in and checked out the car. First thing first, I open the coolant canister (See attachment) and there no coolant inside with only drip’s remaining at the bottom. Is this supposed to empty or full?

Now, if this is the cause. I like to know what brand of coolant do you recommend for the car? Is the 50/50 stuff okay? I need simple over counter stuff where I can pick easily to test out. Thanks!

Don't drive it! That's WAY to hot! You have a coolant leak, could be from many places, but worth having a look down the middle of the engine with a light, there are various weak spots under here. Regardless, don't drive it 100 miles back to the shop overheating....

That expansion tank should be nearly full - in the WSM it specifies to check it with the engine cold and "....the level must not fall below 2.8" to 3.1" from the level of the coolant filler."

It doesn't say how high it "can" be, so I keep mine fairly full.

Check the hoses that run under the intake plenum.

I'd bet there's no coolant in the system. Period. Radiator leaks are notorious.

Fill the water tank until the water nearly touches the fill pipe. Use a mixture of 30 to 50% coolant, but make sure it's propyl-glycol and not ethyl-glycol.
For testing purposes you can also use simple distilled water. There will always be some of the original coolant left in the system providing corrosion protection.

May be a long shot, but if there is coolant in the system, check hose 53 in the above diagram at the connection clamped with item 52. Remove that and ensure coolant comes out of the radiator at that connection and the hose. If not, the radiator is not being bled of air and the radiator effectiveness will be drastically reduced. Mine was plugged and I had to use a straightened paper clip to dislodge it. Bled itself nicely after that and following a top off of coolant, it ran nice and cool.

OMG!!! You are a guys are the best. The hose completely plugged up(See Pics). I used very thick paper clip and slowly removed all the grime and dirt out. After that I ran it through an air pump to remove all remaining debris and make sure it is free flowing. Topped off the coolant tank with the recommended mix and the car is running great. The Water Temperature is holding steady one line under 190 in Fall Temperatures. Both fans are running fine also. Thank you very much for the great tips and useful information. I finally enjoy my new to me ride!

That's great. I, too, have found this group to be a great resource (though I miss Taz; he was the absolute wizard).

good you found it. i recently went thru this kind of hunt on my 512tr, and it turned out the radiator cap was faulty !! a $20 part.

btw, i would mention this to the garage where it was being repaired - they should have noticed.

Heeroyue, you are not done. If you have junk in one you have in the rest of the system including the radiator. Flush the system well and change the hoses. I am happy you did not have major issue. Good luck. Sark.

Sark, I was thinking about the same thing. I am planning on getting everything checked out this weekend. Thx!

Deanhalter/2000 456M, Thx! they are Novitec's NF2's, but not nearly $13K. I got it off eBay special for a third of that price from Exoticar Auto. They are good guys. The ride is just a little harsher because of the rims size and lack of sidewall. LOL!

car looks great. What color is it?

Love the upgraded wheels. Noticed the window gap needs some attention but they always do.

IF those hoses are not proper now, I'd have all the hoses checked and consider SRI, Dave Helm's, hoses first: They are the best.

If there's that much gunk in that hose, it'll be everywhere. Do a full flush and check all the hoses. Dave's hoses are engineered beyond belief and would be a good option for replacement...

It's a 97 - 456GTA Rosso Monza with Tan interior. I pulled a few more lines today and it looks cleaner the previous hose. Started it up and went for a drive. Everything feels good. I am planning on getting a flush soon though and will look into Dave Helm's hoses...thx!

I would pull the plenum, and replace all three hoses with Dave Helm's, hoses while you do the flush.
