Hey guys, I just picked up my first Ferrari (2001 360 Spyder, Grigio Alloy, F1) and have a question on the water temperature gauge. I live in SoCal and have noticed that the needle goes to 280 degrees (to the red, sometimes a few degrees more) when I'm idling at a stop-light or just parked with the car on after normal driving. As soon as I get moving the needle drops back down to the middle (210 degrees or lower if I'm going faster). Is this considered normal? I've searched everywhere and can't find an answer. The manual says to stop the car once the red light turns on, but the light does not turn on. The car runs fine and has not caused any issues yet. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the help, I'll post some pictures soon!

On mine, the Water Temp is usually at 196-210 F idle. The fans kick on at about 208F. Water Temp should not exceed 257F. I would check the coolant reservoir level.

I get it checked out, should not pass the mid way, even on a 100+F summer day

Perhaps the fans are not kicking in because of a bad temp switch. I would imagine that anywhere approaching the red sector is bad news.

Don't delay get it checked, or it could become extremely expensive, and even if you have a guarantee you could be without the car for some considerable time if she 'cooks' the motor.

Don't know the cooling setup that well and didn't take the time to look it up BUT

This is a classic symptom of air in the cooling system. A bubble gathers at the sensor and the temp rises quickly. Then, when you start moving, there is circulation and the localized temp drops back to normal.

As stated already, this can cause HUGE problems so get it fixed immediately. Don't drive it that way unless you really want to do some engine work.

When the car is cold and the engine is off, check your coolant. It's not uncommon for people to sell a used Ferrari with almost no coolant (e.g. an auction car).

The symptoms that you describe above are consistant with radiator fans not coming on. Check your cooling fan fuses.

Whatever you do, don't let the water temp hit the red line...because that's a good way to warp aluminum heads (which will blow your head gasket). Once warped, engine heads will require machining or outright replacement if they can't be machined.

360s are tougher to fill water systems than most, it could well be an issue with air pockets or possibly the fan issue (actually related since low circulation will not get a flow past the fan switch). Get it checked now, it will not fix itself. I always use a vacuum style filler and then still go through to bleed the system before running a systems check. HTH

If it's an airlock issue, there is a great danger doing this. There could be a sudden surge of hot coolant out of the neck which at best will only make a mess, worst, take off some skin. Time for real help IMO.

Definitely get it fixed, as this could cost you thousands of dollars.

Water pumps go out on 360s regularly, so that could be your issue. This is a few grand to fix. Or, it could be a bad sensor. Ferrari uses notoriously bad sensors and connectors throughout the car. The sensor could be bad or you could have a loose connection. This might only cost you hundreds of dollars to fix, if that.

I live in Las Vegas and got my car (1999 360 F1) in July and the temp never got over 210/220, even when driving around town when it was 110 degrees.
