Hi Guys, 1970 246gt M Series My water temperature sender has decided to stop working! I am terrified of removing it as its the original sender. Any tips for removal to try to avoid breaking it off?
there is no easy way unfortunately, you just have to go for it. I had the same fear when i changed mine some years ago and it came out pretty easy in the end. I found the Superformance sender unit was the closest match to the Veglia gauge, dont beleive those that say there units are an exact match...they are not. It may read a little on the high side but you can make adjustment if you add a inline resistor Read this, it may help https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/veglia-water-temp-gauge-aftermarket-sender-unit.583781/
Thanks Tony, much appreciated. I have already bought the Superformance sender unit based on your recommendation.
Just out of curiosity, how did you determine/diagnose the malfunction is in the sending unit, not in the gauge or wiring, etc ?
Hi Timo, The reading on my gauge got progressively lower over the space of a few weeks of using the car until it got to the point of only just registering on the gauge. I earthed the sender wire and the gauge went to the full hot position. I will of course clean the gauge connections as part of the sender replacement project. Have you any suggestions for me regarding further checks?
Hi Charles, One test would require removal of the sending unit, and placing it into a pot of water while heating it (the water) on the stove with Ohm tester leads/wires connected to the sending unit and watch if the range in the meter reading changes and if it does how much. You can also use a generic, mechanical temperature gauge/tester with a probe, like the one’s used in baking/cooking, in the water to record and compare its reading to the tester and/or the gauge on your dash. You can (& perhaps should) also do the same testing for the new replacement unit before installation, perhaps even perform one on the small camping stove next to the car while connecting additional, extended test leads/wires from the unit in the pot to wires normally connected onto the sending unit in the car. This will give you chance to see what the gauge on the dash does or reads and/or if there’s some potential problem with the wiring between the sending unit & the gauge on the car. For this test you could also use a hairdryer or heat gun, carefully blowing hot/warm air onto sending unit, but this can be difficult to ascertain the actual temperature of the sending unit. Come to think of it, you might want to perform above type tests with the replacement sending unit first, before removing the existing one.
Thanks Timo, I will definately try all your suggestions. Thank you so much for taking the time to provde me with some great info.
