My wife is an engineer at Daimler Chrysler. They are set to do their mass layoffs this week. We get to sit around with our fingers crossed wondering what will happen.

It will be an incredibly stressful week for us.

Everyone is susceptible. I believe they will layoff between 5,000 - 10,000 people in total.

    Things happen for a reason.....

If she does get layed off, she will get a better, higher paying job with one of Daimler's competitors.

I wouldn't worry too much about it

Absolutely. Ford just got rid of 10,000 people as well. The big 3 (G.M., Chrysler, and Ford) are hurting big time, and since all of them are based out of Michigan, many people are affected. It really sucks.

    I like your optimism.

Unfortunately, with the big 3 letting go of so many people, the job market is flooded with engineers looking for work.

I guess we'll see what happens........

Dan, sorry to hear about your predicament. Hope that all works out for you two. I have a few guys that work part time for me, who also work at 'Damn near Chrysler' that are calling it the St. Valentines Day Massacre.

Around here it seems that there are 10 applicants for every one job opening in the auto industry. She may have to move from automotive to another sector...defense springs to mind as a closely related field. I know that there are a number of General Dynamics facilities close to us here in the tri-county area.

Why not go into the active mode and look for another job now before the layoffs start. Maybe she can get ahead of the curve and move on. You always look more valuable when you have a job. I think even if she doesn't get the ax now, they will be doing it again soon. This happened to my brother and he got laid off in the third round. It took him 2 years to get another job. I kept telling him to start looking before the end but he didn't listen and was screwed up a while. He also was in his mid 50's and that gets to be tough to find a job. Good luck in whatever you decide.

There's a lot of people feeling the pain in Michigan and other NA automotive areas. MI had the second highest December unemployment rate of 7.1% largely due to downturn in automotive. She'll probably have to jump ship and seek out the Toyota's etc. or possibly defense industry. Good luck with it.

When you work for someone else, you should always have a contingency plan. Always be prepared to relocate.

Even if she isn't laid off this time, it may happen later when you are older and jobs are harder to get.

The unemployment level is low now. Near historical lows. Effectively, we are at full employment in the US. Will probably get worse rather than better.

Be proactive, positive and enthusiastic. Nobody wants to hire downers.

People are always looking to hire good people who are looking for "work", not looking for a "job". It's just a matter of hooking up with them. Decide what you really like to do, and go for that.

    Good luck.

Hopefully she will be able to dodge the bullit this time, but I agree with what some of the others are saying about looking now for something else. The bad thing about the Detroit area is even if you want to relocate to another state, you can't afford to because houses aren't selling here. Lets hope this doom and gloom doesn't last long. I wish her luck.

Another 'easier said than done' message.

I was laid off last June (entire company folded), and I've been looking ever since. I'm 48, and I can sense when I walk into an interview how things will go, and I have absolutely aced some drop-dead interviews, but didn't get the job(s). And it isn't pay that's holding me back, I am 'priced right' for my profession.

And there are all kinds of things that skew the jobless rate - you should know that - one thing is that folks drop off the chart after 2 years so they are not even counted, the other is called 'underemployment'. Someone that made 85K as a Systems Programmer now makes 20-24K a year doing temp IT work, it's not pretty out there.

I was laid off of a different job 5 years ago and landed a new job 4 months later, and I then immediately got us out of debt except for the mortgage, and refi'd that down 25%. If I had not done that, we would be in a world of hurt right now, but so far, 8 months into this, we have not had to tap into any investments, and only a very small amount of savings has been touched.

I feel for and understand completely what 40+ people go through when jobs disappear, I've lived it twice now.

Always be prepared to relocate? You make it sound so easy. Firstly, I have a job here that I really enjoy and earn a decent living at.............so I should leave my job too and hope that both of us find new jobs where we end up relocating to? That doesn't make sense to me. Secondly, if I put my house up for sale right now, I'd probably lose 25% of it's value to sell it sooner than later.

We have been through this before. My wife worked for Chrysler when Mercedes bought them, and proceeded to lay off 5,000 workers. She got let go as part of that. She immediately got a job through a contract house, and was placed at.......you guessed it................back at Chrysler. So here she was, back at Chrysler 2 weeks after being laid off by them, and making more money than when she was direct. She kept pushing to become direct again, which she did become after a few years.

When my wife places her resume on Monster.com, we usually get 3-5 messages every single day from employers or head hunters. Granted, all of these positions do pay less than what she currently makes, but at least those options are there.

I am not interested in moving from state to state. I like to feel settled down where I am living. To me, relocating would be an absolute last resort.
