First, we have to tell you that there is not an actual 'cure' for a hangover; however, there are many ways to get rid of it faster! In this article we will cover some of the basics of treating the nastiest of hangovers. More detailed information can also be found at the Hangover Network website.

Hair of the dog. Ever heard of it? It is derived from the old phrase "eat the hair of the dog that bit you". Yeah it's rather strange, but we didn't make it up. Contrary to popular belief, drinking more alcohol when experiencing a hangover does not cure a hangover. It merely delays the inevitable effects of the hang over. However, a few of the recipes I have found actually do have some benefits, other than the liquid part of it. One recipe such as the Prairie Oyster, aka Cowboy Bebop, includes vodka and a raw egg in tomato juice, with a dash of Worcestershire, salt and black pepper. Eggs are actually very beneficial to those attempting to alleviate the symptoms of a hangover. Eggs contain an amino acid called cysteine. Cysteine actually offsets effects of acetaldehyde toxins. So consuming eggs after a long night of drinking may not be a bad idea. Maybe it will mop up all those left over toxins your liver produced and couldn't get to without more water and other elements.

Another recipe is the classic bloody Mary. What is really great about these two are the fact that they both also contain tomato juice which not only helps hydrate you, but it also provides salts and vitamins such as vitamin c with helps fight antibodies which are left behind during the alcohol metabolism process, as well as boost your immune system to help fight those nasty germs and viruses you may have picked up recently as your body is much less immune due to the lack of needed vitamins and minerals in your depleted, hung over body.

Water, sports drinks are a necessity when treating a nasty hangover. Hydration is key. In addition, sports drinks provide electrolytes to help hydrate your body faster, along with providing vitamins and minerals your body needs to replenish what it had lost from metabolizing alcohol.

Pain relievers, other than aspirin which tends to be an irritant on the stomach, are a necessity as any person who has had at least one hang over would know. In regards to Tylenol or other acetaminophen pain relievers, the reason these types can damage your liver is because it increases the number of toxic substances that the liver needs to deal with and the human liver only has so much to work with before it runs out of essential elements to provide proper metabolism. When toxins 'pile up' on your liver it can cause some serious damage. Please consult your doctor for more details.

Sleep is a necessity during a hang over as you more than likely did not even get into R.E.M. at all due to the glutamine rebound where sugars are replenished. This causes you to be asleep, but 'out of it' the next day due to the fact that your brain did not get much rest, if any.

Some other items which can really help the stomach would include, bouillon soup, bread, crackers, bananas (also helps replenish potassium) and ginger.

One more thing I wanted to mention in this article is coffee. Many people, including myself, need coffee after a long night out. However, the only thing coffee really helps alleviate during a hangover is tiredness. It is actually a stomach irritant to many and yet another diuretic. In other words, it has the ability to dehydrate even further. Coffee can help a bit with the headache, but a pain reliever tends to do the trick.

What always worked for me was drinking a glass of water and taking 2 Tylenol (or whatever) the night before. The next mornin if I "shat" and took a shower I was usually fine unless it was a really bad night. Smoking too much while drinking makes the hangover twice as bad.

In college some one told me to eat a fresh apple right before going to bed after a heavy night of drinking. For some reason, this always worked for me. I also drink a glass of water with it.

I believe the theory on why eating an apple avoids a hang-over the next morning has to do with retaining more moisture in the stomach (like a sponge) and the slow release of fructose in the apple (which is easily converted to blood glucose). Give it a try and see if it works for you. You might be surprised how well you feel the next day.

You know you've truly had too much to drink if you have to hang one foot off the bed (touching the floor) to keep the room from spinning around too fast.

Word to the wise regarding drinking too much: don't drink & drive, don't shop on eBay while intoxicated, don't post your opinions on chat websites while blotto, and stay out of the part of town that has tattoo parlors in it.

When I was in my 20's, my mom told me to eat a box of Total cereal before going out drinking with my friends because it contained Vitamin B which prevented hangovers. She was very smart.

The only reason I didn't get a hangover was because I ate too much to want to drink too much.

I've found Pedialyte (the stuff they sell for babies to replenish them if they are sick) works wonders.

Works great after drinking (just pound a bottle or two before bed to keep hydrated), when you are sick, and after marathon sex sessions :)

I remember when I used to smoke, God, I couldn't have a drink in my hand unless I had a cigarette in the other. They just taste so good together, gut it was hell the next morning, coughing from smoking too much and having a hangover the size of the Grande Canyon don't mix too well.

lol...lol...I have a bad memory of tattoo's and it is on my forearm. When we used to get drunk a lot you didn't want to pass out, you could wake up with a face full of make up or you're eyebrows shaved off. I got lucky, I only got a tattoo that every time I look at it, it reminds of some pretty fun nights we used to have.

One thing that I could never do and some of my friends could is wake up with a bad hangover and start drinking again, just couldn't do it.

Yes but drink more water, pound back a few 600 ml bottles and take a maximum dosage of Tylenol and you'll be as good off in the morning as you can be.

when u drink, u tend to piss out lots of salt from you body. the alcohol u consume from that point makes u get drunk faster, and hence the hangover. in order to cure this, i normally take a can of sports drink before i sleep, or i drink 1 or 2 sachets of Eno. http://www.cap.com.cy/articles/images/eno%20range.jpg

also, a bottle of water by my bedside helps me a lot. i rarely suffer from hangover :)

    A whole box! Holy crap!
Same here. When my dad would call me my first couple years of college, he could tell when I was hungover, laugh, tell me to drink a beer, and call him later. I couldn't do it either.

I've found Gatorade works the best for me. Also take a vitamin (if I remember) before I go to sleep.

I drink a glass of water after every 3 or 4 drinks. Alcohol dehydrates, so the water replenishes. I also will have some Powerade or Gatorade before I go to bed. No cotton mouth and no hangover. Works for me.

Should I go here? Cough syrup w/ codeine is the best. Decongestant component works on swollen blood vessels to reduce headache w/ codeine taking care of nausea like opium. Paregoric from the 1800s.

I hardly get hang overs (lucky i suppose), i'm not sure why...But when I do get a hangover I find that a nice cold beer always works (which is fine, because when i've got a bad hangover thats normally associated with waking up at noon...IE lunchtime after a shower:D).

One time I felt like absolute crap, and had to puke (had to play a rugby match I didnt want to miss, or more to say couldnt...). That helps. but nasty aftertaste as usual. Not recommended:D.

Thanks a lot...lol...guess I wont be trying that one then!

I really don't see how anyone that suffers with a hangover can get up and drink a beer or any alcohol without ralphing and earling all over themselves! Bill Cosby said in one of his comedy shows that he has prayed to the "Porcelain God" a number of times!
