I have been fooling around with the distributors on my '76 for about a month now. I have not been getting full advance, and to say the least, it has been making me batty. My most recent attempt to fix the problem included pulling the distributor apart where I noticed the spring thimble to outer wall clearance to be all out of whack(per the excellent distributor written up by Mike Florio). Matter of fact, the only spring to have any sort of reasonable clearance to the wall was the 700-1000rpm spring that engages first. The 1000-1700 set was at about 1.3mm while the 1700-2300 set was at 1.3mm as well. Is it possible that I was getting a lot of advance while just sitting at idle, therefore forcing me to set the 7degree idle while the distributor was actually advancing? I have yet to test my possible repairs, but I am hopeful that my hypothesis was correct.

No, I don't know anyone in Las Vegas with a distributor machine.

    regards- john

With out a machine you are just beating you head against the wall. Find someone who not only has a machine but also knows those distributors and has serviced at least a few hundred of them. Then Maybe you will have someone who knows how to do it. Send them to him and get them done correctly. It is THE most important part to getting a carb 308 to run correctly.

As much as I enjoy beating my head against the wall, you are probably right. I will probably end up sending them to Larry Buskirk in San Rafael. He is the mechanic who has been wrenching on this car since new.
