I am realy happy to see Nick doing so weel at Williams, I always thought he would do really well if he could get his hands on a top car, and now he is proving it. It is clear that Frank is really happy with him also. The dilema is that Button is waiting in the wings for 2006 and I believe Frank really wants him. Mark Webber has not worked out so far, and has a contract for 2006. So..... could the simple solution be a straight swap between Bar and Williams for Button and Webber ? I reckon it is possible and looks like a good deal for both teams.

Tough choice. A logical solution would be to for Williams to keep whichever driver performs better during the season, and then make couple of shoot out sessions between Button and the other one.

I personally would like to see Heidfeld in a Williams next year. Not only has he performed above the general expectations but he has proven to be a top notch driver. He deserved this break after he out performed Kimi at Sauber and yet never got the McLaren drive.

I was told that Webber is a very good driver given a competitive car.
This still remains to be seen IMO.

It makes it even worse that Mark "the choke" Webber can qualify but can't bring it together in a race. He is the better qualifying driver in the Williams team, not on the whole grid. So he places better than Heidfeld in qualifying - doesn't matter much considering points come from how quick you get to the finish line, not how quick you qualify. Webber has a nice feather in his cap "Hey I qualified better" but where it matters, in the race, he chokes every single time and Heidfeld has done way better for the team than he has.

If I was Frank, I'd ditch him and get someone else at the end of the year to go with Heidfeld.

Sir Frank: Keep Webber. Hard to judge after @ one-half of one season. Introducing another new driver to a team is just too complicated especially after one season.

Please buy us a clue !
Last time I checked points are awarded to race results and not qualifying. If Webber outperforms Heidfeld in the races then he has the upper hand, it's as simple as that. In the mean time Heidfled has more points in the championship. You're right about something, we'll see at the end of the season.

I thought based on Button's contract that it is now a given that he'll join Williams for next year (but what's a given in F1 anyway).

If BMW buys out Sauber, I'd think they'd love to have German Nick in there and would probably dump JV into retirement. That would leave Webber at Williams.

As far as the quality of the drivers, my picking order:

    Button>Heidfeld>Webber

At any rate, if Webber doesn't get his act together before the end of the year, I think he's history. What we have seen so far is not very promising.

Jacques has a 2 year contract. Theissen said he would like to have Jacques driving for his team. Massa's contract will be over at the end of this season and I think he will go to another team.

If Frank Williams wants Button I hope he gets him. Keep Heidfeld, and watch him regularly beat Button throughout the season. Heidfeld drove the best race last weekend, IMHO, he didn't make the mistakes KR & FA did. Very steady and impressive.

As far as Webber, he certainly has a place in F1 and deserves to be there. One of the most exciting drivers to watch simply because of his unpredictability. Sato and Webber at BAR would be interesting to say the least. If he does leave Williams, I could actually see him as a teammate to JV at Sauber.

If MS retires, who knows what would happen. Perhaps KR goes red, and Webber teams up with Montoya at McLaren. Fireworks would be assured.

In my perfect world, however, the top teams all reject Button and he ends up driving a Minardi for a couple of years to learn some humility.

I knew we would have this problem.

Most people (not me) thought Nick was just an average driver and that Webber would destroy him. Not the case..

If BMW decides to leave Williams......NH should go to Sauber/BMW.
Williams will probably end up with Cosworth engines. I'm sure Button will be very excited hearing that.

But it seems like BMW are still going to supply engines to Williams.

No matter what happens...I want Heidfeld driving for a good team next year. If I see him at MidlandF1, Minardi or 3rd driver for a top team, I will hate Button forever.

I'm pretty sure Williams will do the right thing. And the way things are going that would suggest Button takes over from Webber.

People sort of forgot Heidfeld was a very accomplished driver in junior formulae and an F3000 champion. In 2001 he outperformed (not by a lot) Kimi at Sauber and still did not get the Mclaren drive.
Heidfeld definitely belongs in a top team and he's proven that so far.

Give Webber a chance. In any event, I do not think Button is any better than Webber, kind of a toss up.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Webber, he is agressive, a hard worker and a really nice person from what I see, it is clear that Frank likes him also, and being Australian in a British team works out well. But Frank does have this thing for Jenson and he is British, and all teams like to have a home driver if possible, plus it has to be said that Jenson is less error prone than Mark Webber. It could be that a Sauber buy out by BMW would take Nick from Williams. If Schumacher quits then all sorts of changes may happen, I think Ferrari would change both drivers, but they will have to pay huge money to get Kimi !! and I doubt that Ron would take even that much, especially to go to Ferrari.

Heidfeld will outpace Webber the whole season, especially after this weekend. You can see it in Webber how Heidfeld is getting to him. Heidfeld has alway been an amazing driver and personally I think he is championship material. I even think he is more talented than Montoya and Kimi. Take a look at his record prior to Formula one. The guy pretty much won everyhing he competed in right away. What really hurt Heidfeld, was when Mclaren snatched Kimi over him. That really affected his confidence, but now I think we will see some great things from him. Here is Heidfeld and Webber' record before F1.

    Heidfeld

    F. Ford 1600, Germany, 1°
    1995 F. Ford 1800, Germany, 1° / F. Ford, Germany, 2°
    1996 F3, Germany, 3°
    1997 F3, Germany, 1°
    1998 F3000, 2°
    1999 F3000, 1° / F1 (McLaren), test driver

    Webber

    F. Ford, Australia
    1995 F. Ford
    1996 F. Ford Festival, 1°
    1997 F3, England
    1998 GT (Mercedes)
    1999 GT (Mercedes)
    2000 F3000, 3°
    2001 F3000, 2° / F1 (Benetton), test driver

Unless something turns for the worst, I can't imagine Frank messing with his driver lineup just because he wanted Button in the past. This is almost a repeat of Heidfeld's situation with McLaren. He was all ready to get signed, but the team went with Kimi. Button to Williams is old news.

I am with Jack on this one. Lets see how the year pans out, however, if BMW do buy Sauber, they will take Heidfeld who has done an excellent job. I think Mark has had a bit of bad luck and as far Jenson goes, I don't see why everybody is so crazy for him. He is very steady, but he tends to lack a bit of tiger.

He was a revelation in his first year in F1. Since then his brilliance shines through once in a while (Imola 04 comes to mind). I think he is blindingly fast but has a real motivation problem. Maybe after his first victory he'll be there.

Speedwise I think he is up there with the best of the best and probably the best the UK had in a long time. Long as going back to Il Leone.

Trust Williams to keep getting into these situations. In another repeat of 2001, they have three drivers going into seats - four if you also include Pizzonia.

Contractually, Webber is the only one with a seat for 2006. Heidfeld is on a one race deal. Williams have the right to take Button if he doesnt score more than 75% of points for this season by August end. The way BAR is racing now, BAR doesnt have a chance to hold onto him unless a deal is brokered.

I think one of the key points in this conundrum is whether BMW shifts base to Sauber. If BMW goes there, Heidfeld will go leaving Frank Williams no option but to take Button.

If BMW stays on, Frank Williams will sell the 2006 rights for Button back to BAR for a price.

I personally think the driver line-up is fine as it is. Heidfeld did a great job in a sh1tty Jordan and persevered thru it all with great composure. BAR is bound to improve and Button is the acknowledged top dog there. Sato is not a threat at all. Webber has to improve or he will find himself back with the bottom feeders.

Webber and Button can swap seats, girlfriends, managers, helmets, engines and teams all they want!

It does not matter because niether of them will ever be world champion!
