How realistic is it to expect to drive a carbed 308 more or less daily? I have another car, but the 308 is in such great shape and drives so well that I'd like to use it a lot if I know it will start and get me home when I want. Can I expect that from the Webbers? I don't have a lot of time to tinker with it.

The car will definitely get the ignition upgrade. I imagine retrofitting fuel injection on that car would be unrealistic. Or would it? Or would it even be a big improvement in reliabilty? I drove cars for a long time before injection came along and never had a lot of trouble. I never had one with four Webbers though.

I have just over 78,350 miles on my 1978 308 GTS with Webbers. They have never been tampered with and this car starts every time with no trouble.

    Ollie,

That is GREAT to know. Thank you so much. It makes my decision much easier.

    Absolutely.
    The keys to Webers are:
    1. Set them up right and do not futz with them.
    2. DRIVE the car to keep gas from sitting up in them
    3. Good fuel filters.

Mine have been dang reliable for 6 years.

Great everyday car for commuting if you can afford the 8 miles to a gallon fuel rate.

I look at it this way: All that gasoline is going for a good cause.

Most tinkering is done because of problems caused by something other than the carbs. In other words the carbs. are often blamed when they shouldn't be and then everything gets "thrown off." Once set up correctly they should stay that way for quite a while.

PS. only one "b" in Weber.

    Very reliable.
Set them right once, and forget it. I haven't needed to mess with them in almost 5 years.

Pretty much bullitproof. I just set mine up after 5 years of driving. Last person who touched them did not get it right but it still ran good. Now with the Birdman tune up guide all is well. I don't expect to touch them again. Go for it , should not be a problem.

carburator is a French word meaning "do not mess with them"...LOL!

My three 308GTBs are daily drivers .....it's usually clutch, brakes, or ignition that's the problem!

It is true you need someone that really understands our set up, to set them right then you are good for years as others have mentioned.

Mine haven't required adjustment since my major service over four years ago and even then, just a minor adjustment was made by my technician servicing the car for the first time. They're set up right, enabling me to do this without any problem:
