I'm looking to start a website and need input on the best software to use.

the website will feature the following.

Members will post pics to categorized galleries for other members/ visitors to view.

members will be able to title and briefly describe the pic.

along with the categories I want a search feature.

any help pointing to good software would be greatly appreciated.

You need gallery software. Google it. If it's beyond your capabilities, I think you will need to hire someone.

You could cobble something together with a mashup of an existing service like flickr, but it would fall apart pretty quickly.

Unless you're already a web designer (which you post suggests you are not), I think
this is probably going to be out of your reach. Outside of using www.blogger.com
or similar sites, this is going to take a LOT of design expertise to put together, involving
a lot of server side stuff like SQL databases and server side code. Server storage
and bandwidth are going to be big issues as well.

Maybe check Craigslist in your area and try to find a "starving web designer" to work
    with on this.

    Good luck with your project.

Is it a private website or a business website? If the latter, is the website supplementary to your business (like the website of your plumber) or is it your main "product" (like Facebook)? "Website kits" usually only work for private sites, if it is related to your business, you'd better hire someone to do it right.

A possible solution for you is WordPress. Since there are factors in your description that suggest interaction with viewers. . .software that began as a blogging tool may be the way to go.

    1. "Members" : That suggests having users become able to modify the site to some extent, with adding photo galleries, and adding descriptions. WordPress can allow you to give members their own pages where they can add photo galleries, content, etc. It's searchable.

Given your limited web building experience, WordPress is a very possible solution as it is a pre-built tool that gives you a "control panel" experience to build the site. Plus it's free, has tons of free plug-in expandability, has a huge user community for support, etc.

It's good in that you have the control over your site, instead of having to run back to the web guy every time you need something done.
