Hi - I am planning a trip to Manhattan around New Year, likely staying near Central Park for the weekend. I would like to avoid valet and I don't plan to take the car out during the stay.

Are there any parking garages that folks here would recommend that I can drive myself in and will be safe/spacious enough?

I don't mind a bit of a walk in the city.

try using “Spot Hero” they will show you all the park lots and garages in the city. You can reserve and pay in advance.

They will show you which ones are self park (not many) vs valet.

    Good luck!

Good suggestion. I've used Spot Hero in the past. Didn't know they had a "self park" filter. I'll check it out.

My past experience has been with a $20 tip going in, the parking garage attendant will let you park it yourself. Most are actually happy they dont have to have the responsibility for parking. You will have to leave your key, usually.

It depends on the parking garage.

If they have an elevator the attendant won't let you self park as they have liability.
