Hey - I would love to know how much you guys think I weigh in the above pics. I’m 6’3”. Don’t be afraid to guess high or guess low - I’m genuinely interested in what you think I weigh. I think this will be educational for the group. I’ll post my weight after a few of you chime in. I’m in the red shorts. Thanks!

I suspect you two bracketed the number but it is much closer to the 165 than 185. My guess is 170.

But I have never cut for a show so I don't know if you purposely drop water weight before the show or not. If you do, the 165 is very close and maybe even a few pounds high.

You guys are pretty good. I’m 167 on stage. I dieted down to 164 the week before the show and put on three pounds from carbing up the last week.

I started prep at 186 but I won’t let myself get that big again. I’m going to try and stay sub 175 this time. We’ll see how things go.

I had the advantage of knowing what I looked like at 184, I am 6'6". That made it a LOT easier :)

My walk around weight is 190 (plus or minus about 3 lb). It probably should be a bit more but I am not structured enough in eating to get the calories needed to weigh more.

I'm just under 190 at 5 10", my fighting weight is 180. I'd probably have to get around 165 to get in stage but I would probably look a lot bigger. It is truly an illusion. These days it's a win if I can see my abs.

You guys are all super lean. I walk around at 6’6” 265lbs…lol. I graduated HS at 185lbs and never lifted weights until that first summer. I gained 40lbs in 4 months and never looked back. I fell in love with power, and every time I lose weight, I lose too much strength in the process, and so I have stayed around 260lbs for the last 15 years. However, in the my early 50’s now, and probably need to consider tapering down.

Power lifting is very different than bodybuilding, but you know that. Genetics plays a big part in this. I have always had the long/lean look, I was 6'2" 127lb in 6th grade. I didn't have enough muscle mass to control my structure. I graduated HS at 6'6" 175lb and was probably around 8% body fat. Most people can't walk around at my normal body fat and feel ok, I am probably around 10%. Just like you don't have my build, I could NEVER have the build you have. My genetics don't support that.

    Very well done Scott.
You look very ripped from the back especially; and that's an extremely hard body part to loose the last bit of fat from.
You were a very clear number 2 and much better toned than number 3.
Number 1 is the darker genbtleman on the left I suppose.
That height difference is almost too much to overcome. You would need to add 30 pounds of muscle to your frame to do so.
Still, broad shoulders, defined arms, nice vtaper. Complete package.
    Respect!

Do what feels right to your joints. No need to taper down if this is your 'set point' weight.
Yes heavy weights put a strain on your body.
But listen closely and some individuals can still be insanely strong in their 50's.

    Genetics are the biggest part.
Screw that dogmna "hard work beats talent crap". it has zero to do with body building / powerlifting. Zero.
I've seen kids/youg guys walk into the guym for the frist tiome and walk out an hour later as if they have been lifting for 20 years or so.
There will always be freaks/genetic wonders that build strength/muscle like no other. You can not outwork that.
Simply have a look at a teenager Jay Cutler or Ronnie Coleman.
They looked like professional body builders after 1 year of going to the gym.
I've know several powerlifters who were able to bench press 300lbs the first time they even tried the bench press in their life!

That's not to say we can dramatically alter the way we look/strength.
But there are simply limits we all have; it's just that some have much higher limits then others.
Simply enjoy the ride, love the challenge and stay healthy.

  17. Talent will always beat hard work, unless that talent does not work hard.

That's true in life, in body building, and just about everything in between.

For today's somewhat interesting, and a bit disturbing, detail. I already knew my dumbbell bench is very close to my flat bench. I have always attributed that to mechanics of being a tall guy. SO, end of last week I was doing narrow grip bench; I haven't done it in a long time. My narrow grip is at least as good as my regular flat bench. I didn't do quite as much weight since we were testing where to work that exercise BUT within 20lb or so the weight was literally flying up. My triceps are so strong they blow through what is historically my slow spot. HUM??? Clearly that means my bench form needs work. Of course that realization made me carefully think through the path & position I use, again. The conclusion was that I let my elbows move too far out/up putting the load on the front delt. Sure, that gets me to about 225 but I struggle above that (1 rep PR is 245). If I keep the elbows lower it should launch the bar through my slow spot getting me out of the front delt and back into the chest where it belongs.

Clearly I am slow at times but I do eventually learn. ;) I will send up some 205's and a 225 narrow grip and post up the results. I haven't done 225 narrow grip yet but it should be easy given how the bar was moving at 205.

Yes, I think about my lifts and often dissect them repetitively. Nothing OCD about me.

You are correct, being tall means the bar to to travel a longer distance and you are at a disadvantageous position.
Dumbells are often a more ‘ safer’ alternative then the bar as dumbells give you a bit more mobility.

If you struggle with your bench you could try pauze reps as the bottom. A technique often used by powerlifters to increase pec explosiveness and motor unit recruitment. Or try one and a half reps to emphasize the bottom part.

Agreed and thank you. I am very strong with dumbbells and can work 100's for sets of 5-6. I can probably get several at 110 but need to work on my launch for those. I self launch dumbbells but narrow benches at the gym pose some challenges.

On the flat bench, once the elbows are above parallel to the ground (lowest leverage point) it is going up. So yes, we do pause reps and I have been working on exploding off the chest to provide momentum through the slow spot. That explosiveness is why I am going to try using more tricep at the bottom, narrow grip launches off the chest. I haven't tried 1-1/2 reps with the pump at the bottom. That is a good idea and is how I got the flexibility back into my shoulder (old injuries) when I came back to lifting.

I didn't get a video yesterday but was sending 225 Pendlay rows for 3 with at least 2-3 reps in reserve. That was after a good amount of volume at 165, 185, 195, and 205. I was alternating that with seated OHP on the Smith machine. I was doing the 1-1/2 reps on the Smith, that was a lot of fun.

I will check it out. We were traveling and then caught some cold/flu thing that has been tough to shake. I rarely get sick but this was pretty bad and I had a hard time shaking it off. Over 2 weeks now and my wife is still feeling questionable. BUT, I have been back at the gym and quickly ramping up again. I have been trying a few new things and some new positions to maximize the work. I have also been working on more precise muscle activation, a fun process. I will post some new videos and let you what is working for me & what is not.

I have been an athlete all my life. I began lifting weights at 18. I have never stopped. Work out every day. Am on a strict eating regime ( no carbs, lots of protein, no junk, lots of seeds, nuts and healthy oils- avocado, olive oil) My weight has always been 180 lbs. I turned 69 in April.
