Months ago, in the midst of changing out that external rubber seal on the shifter shaft, I forgot to leave it in gear. Messed it up, so I put it in the air, dropped the pan, and set it right.

    Or so I thought.

    I noticed today that when I shift 1 - 2 - 3 - 4- 5, all is well

    When I downshift 5 - 4 then 4 - 3 (which I don't often do) I actually end up back in 5th!

    Now, if I go 5 - 3 , it works just fine.

I hope this is just my handiwork rather than a gearbox problem unrelated to my messing about.

Before I drop that pan again to look, any comments?

    TIA

Aligning the shifter linkage is more delicate than one would image. There are several very good threads on the subject. In addition, check you engine mounts. Excessive engine movement will throw off the linkage. Also check the rubber bushings on either end of the external linkage shaft.

By 'external rubber seal' do you mean the rubber boot over the shift shaft?
If so, then presumably you just pulled the shift bushing thru-bolt out to separate the joint & slipped the new boot on.

If your shift alignment changed, most likely it's because you swapped the shift bushing's ends and the shift bushing's rubber had taken an off-center set. It's also possible that the shift bushing has degraded and the inner sleeve is no longer firmly positioned.

I'd take a really good look at that bushing to see if it needs replacing.

If the bushing is OK, then the fork on the shift rod's end is very slightly missaligned & it's time to pull the tranny sump, loosen the bolt on the fork and align it to the center of the 3 L rods with the tranny being kept in neutral. For small tweaks this is easier & quicker to do than to fight with the turnbuckle adjustment in the rod's middle.

Well, yes, but since the car was in N at the time (instead of the recommended 2nd) I messed it up. Had to drop the sump and reset everything. THought I got it right, but never noticed this behavior until now.

Guess I'll drop her down and look around.
