This is going to sound odd, but the plastic key ring holding my house keys together managed to fall through the crack inside the ash tray into the depths of the transmission tunnel. Yeah, I know, how the hell did that happen - there's a narrow opening on the inside front of the ash tray on the 550, which will allow thin things to fall through. Typical Ferrari interior build quality. Thank God the keys stayed on the surface.

This key ring has a plastic fob about 4cm x 2cm and I am concerned that it might find its way into the mechanical bits (sorry for the techno jargon) making up the transmission itself. I tried unscrewing the ash tray and having a dig around in there, but no luck, so it must have dropped further.

Do I need to go to the effort of having the thing extracted in case it eventually causes some catastrophic mechanical failure, or is there no possibility of foreign bodies coming into contact with any part of the transmission?

Thanks for any help you can provide,

    Harris

The transmision case is sealed and doubt any problem could possible occur.

The transmission itself is fitted in the rear of the car, so even if it found it's way forward of the ashtray (doubtfull) and through the gear selector( impossible) then it wouldn't cause any harm to your transmission. I'd leave it!

Pull out the radio, ashtray etc and the pannel lifts out. you should be able to find what you dropped.
There is no way for the item to fall into the transmission from there.
