Has anyone else noticed a strange shadow-mass above the car's rear when the car is moving side-to-side, heading towards the TV camera? I don't see it when the car is on a straight-away or from an elevated camera angle. It doesn't appear to be heat-related diffusion, or shadowing from sunlight either. I've never noticed this effect in any previous years. If you have qualifying on "tape," find the four seconds between 3:05 and 3:08 of Q2 to see this effect.

    Any plausible explanations?

I've thought of that, but heat-related diffusion (think of video footage of cars on a heat-soaked runway, heading towards the camera) doesn't create a shadow. Noticed this effect only occurs when there are spectator stands and fencing in the background of the camera angles.

I'm sure I've already seen the warm air escaping from a standing still f1's engine produce shadows on the tarmac, similar to an upside down water stream. I imagine the different refraction index of the warm air creates diffraction maxs and mins on the tarmac if that makes any sense.

    Igor,
Thank you for your effort in trying to figure it out. But this shading effect is seen ABOVE the cars, not underneath on the asphalt. If you've recorded qualifying, can you go to the 3:07 mark in Q2 to see what I'm talking about? There were a couple of moments in Q3 when this shading/shadowing were observed.

    Anyone else notice this effect?

Seems that the car is punching a darker clean hole through the hazy exhaust air hanging over the track as it comes towards the camera. That is what I saw in practice and qualifying.

At the pool complex, it is brake dust being thrown into the air.

The shading/shadow patch moves "in-synch" with the car. Brake dust or hazy air wouldn't behave the same way. It doesn't look like a vortex.
