I have gotten into a discussion with a very good friend regarding values of 348's. After almost a year of research and countless discussions both here and elsewhere my opinion is that a concourse quality 36kmile 1993 348ss is worth more than a 9k mile 1994 Spider with sketchy records. Both the same colors. What say you guys?

Yup...I agree...SS is the key there. I'd say near 10K more. (this from an SS owner so "grain of salt")

    Amen.

I have to say it - though the Wizard of Oz premiered in Oconomowoc, has Yoko Ono gone on to Oconomowoc?

If that spider is the one in chicago, it really has over 15,000 miles on it and no records.

Wow Brian, that shot in your avitar puts you in pretty tough company. Looks like a Miura to your driver's side eh?

Well, being an SS owner (cough cough) I would like to say that it is worth more, but it would depend on many conditions to determine how much more, including major engine out completed, and how the owner cares for the car. I would say that the SS would be worth $7-10k more depending on condition.

I would agree that the SS is worth more, assuming equal condition etc. Also assuming that the SS has the Kevlar seats. Without the Kevlar seats, I am not sure a 94 Challenge isn't superior in price.

As someone who paid the premium last year, I believe the choice of a spyder vs. an SS. I think one of the first decisions people make is whether to look for a spyder vs. coupe. Then it is a matter of finding the best spyder or coupe. As the SS is probably the top of the coupe (TB/TS) class, it then commands the highest price in that category.

But you have to compare apples to apples. I would argue that an SS is $5,000 - $10,000 more than a comparable 94 spyder. In your example you give the spyder "sketchy records" and make the SS concourse quality with higher mileage. Now you are introducing the variable of mileage vs. records. With so many 348s out there and so many being abused or not maintained and with the current high cost of parts, records become more valuable than almost anything else.

I would argue a 1990 with complete up to date records is worth more than a 93 with "sketchy records". Records demonstrate that the car has had owners that care and that is important and will likely save you money in the long term.

Very well said. In my opinion, the care and condtion of the car, as well as the detailed service history are by far more important than the mileage and year of manufacture.

Brian, this is the car that sparked the discussion. At any rate, the response was as I would have expected.

Yes Matt, that's a Miura on one side and one of those times that people would walk up and ask " is this your car" I'd say "no, mines the red Ferrari " and the normal response of "Ferrari? oh yes the red one over there! do you know who owns the Miura?"

John, as far as value goes, I really do think an SS would have more potential to increase in value do to the low numbers made, but I personally love my spider as I have always wanted a convertible.
