Yup, it is true. About a month ago I had asked if it was possible, and seemingly it is. Car registered in NJ and pulled over in NY. A stupid Glen Cove cop "team" (2 cars) pulled me over at 1:00am after leaving a bar that they had been watching for HOURS! I was told that when I got there that they had been there all night. Long story short, I get pulled over a 1/4 mile from the bar. I thought that he was just going to ask me if I was drinking (which I don't do) but no, they proceed to not even ask and just harass me for about 10 minutes about the car. Finally, one says, "Your tints look to dark" and then proceeds to pull out the meter. Now they gave me a "correction" form to have them removed and then bring the paperwork as proof or pay the $200 fine! I was thinking of just taking them off and re-doing them but any suggestions beforehand would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear that you met up with a couple of Glen Cove's finest. How about a picture of someone else's blue Viper without tints, as proof you removed it?

Just because cops give a summons doesn't mean it's not without merit. Some will do that esp for out of staters since they assume the motorist doesn't know any better or not inclined to investigate and just pay the fine. What's NJ's law re: tint? You can't reasonably be expected to remove your tint simply for a trip to a neighboring state w.more stringent tint laws. That is ludicrous and while the courts can be retarded I would have a hard time believing they would uphold this citation. That's like saying if GA doesn't require a front lic plate, but NY does and you get cited w.a GA tag in NY for no front tag. If you can contest it via mail I would certainly do that. Send the code section speaking to tint and then furnish your tint report, hell, use the Glen Cove officer's reading.

I think these arsehats were just pissed they couldn't get you on drinking after they, by their own admission, had been waiting all night. They had hardons and got blueballed so they had to rub one out on you unfortunately :(

If it was dark out, how can their light meter read correctly????

Tinted windows are illegal in all 50 states. Of course you can get an out of state ticket, as you found out.

I did not know that. I was recently popped for tinting in Cali and the judge told me anything on the side windows not legal in any state. I guess thats what I get for going to the Peoples Republic of California. Thanks for the link btw.

    Hmmmmm. From that site:
"Windshield No tint is allowed on the windshield. "

And here the factory 308 has tinting along the top of the windshield.

You are correct in your theory that you can't get ticketed out of state for something which is allowed in your car registered state...example, front license plate. BUT, NJ does not allow ANY window tint on the front windows, so light meter or not, you are in violation of NJ law. Making the argument that the light meter was not reading properly is not a basis for dismissal because technically in NJ you should have no tint whatsoever. The cop may have used the meter just to be the "proof" he needs to support the ticket.

Pay the fine and move on-

I spoke to a cop friend of mine and he told me they are not allowed to give a ticket to an out of state driver with tints.

Cops get this "mr joe cool cop" mentality where they thnks they can get away with things like this. If all goes correctly the DMV should overturn the ticket since it is not valid.

    Flash light.

How can a NY cop give a ticket for something that's illegal in NJ? They can't...

Keith, get this thing thrown out like it deserves to be and teach them a lesson. It's not about the money. It's about protecting your rights and everyone else's rights!!!

Called the clerk and that is what she told me. I thought it was high too but Glen Cove might have their own pricing.

Unfortunately would not work as you need to have the form filled out by either a Nassau County Police Department or a Nassau County Registered Inspection Shop.

I have heard that although it sounds stupid, people have gotten tickets for tints even if legal in their state and that the judge sometimes says that when in the state, you have to abide by the state laws.

Along those lines.... radar detectors are legal in 48 states, but not in Virginia, or Oklahoma (or Washington DC). I got a ticket in VA for having (in use  ) a detector. It was legal in NC, but not in VA. That lesson cost me $100. Live and learn....

Sorry to hear about your ticket, Keith!!

Cops can write you all the state-specific vehicle code violation tickets they want on a car registered in another state. Doesn't mean they'll stand up in court. I've dealt with this countless times. You can simply bring your registration and have a chat with the prosecutor/judge, or if it isn't worth your time, simply have a competent traffic attorney deal with it for you. Out of state cops can only write moving violation tickets on out of state vehicles.

Never had one that wasn't dismissed yet.

It's worth noting, however, that if you simply ignore even a non-moving violation from out of state, they can issue a warrant for you.
