That would be awesome!! You would all be very welcome!! I have a huge backyard, Patio, BBQ, hot-tub, pool (prolly too cold for that) everything we'd need for an f-chat party!! Few sights would be as awesome as my caul-de-sac filled with Ferrari's!! We still need an agreed upon date... I'm shooting for somewhere within April 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th. I believe That works for Bruce.... Ernie? FBB?
I'll have to check dates but I know that's my kid's spring break so I'll be skiing and I know I have a race on the 24th weekend. But you guys could tear the box down if you mark where everything goes. It help with organizing my brain and my assembly notes. I say don't wait for me you gotta order parts anyway if april first week works for you guys. Or if Ernie and Bruce feel confident enough just go for it and I'll show up for the assembly party. do you have an air compresor and a good 1/2" air impact wrench? how are you for tools, lockring remover, 271 locktite etc? we really do need a toaster oven and a package of toaster struddle or I'll hillbilly it with a torch.
FBB, allow me to correct you : What happens in Vegas gets posted in this thread and stays in this thread
Steve, I am very sorry to hear about your gearbox. Let's hope its going to be a simple rebuild and the parts list does not get out of hand. Sounds like you have the experts on board so you should be up and running again better than ever. Remember to pick up and extra memory card for the camera, we are all gonna want a ton of photo's, will help us folk who are so far away but still want to be part of the action!! Good luck mate.
I though spring break was over by then? oh well... maybe we should shoot for the following weekend? I believe Bruce is bringing parts from the 2 "parts gearboxes" he has... I think we should try to make this a one-shot-deal, NO WAY do I expect you guys to make TWO trips here for this! Maybe you three guys can communicate with each other to settle on a date? I can order certain parts in advance, like the oil pump bearing? output shaft bearing? triple seals? gaskets? I'm sure Daniel or whoever will take back anything we dont use. Tell me what we WILL need, and what we might need based on the situation, and i'll get the parts before you guys come down. I have a compressor, air tools and all the hand tools you could need besides any Ferrari specific tools, and a ringnut tool. And I will have a toaster oven and your toaster strudel waiting for you! Loctite and rubber bands too!
Thanks James, and fear not my friends, there will be an insane amount of pics taken (and probably some video too) to document Stoogefest Las Vegas!!! i'll probably just setup a huge new album on my FB page and make it public for a couple weeks.
Well if your plan is to have the box out of the car by 4/1/10 you can also open the inspection plate and inspect for obvious damage like broken pinion teeth. You could take off the front plate where the input shaft comes in and feeler gage the synchro clearances or just buy new synchros. WSM has a very short service life on synchros but the rings are not cheap. I have had good luck with re-using ferrari synchros if in spec. I would buy all bearings in the box and you may want to replace the bearing on the clutch shaft too. Get new ring nuts. At least 4 348C GB's and my GB had a failed stake ring on the clutch shaft and that gear blows apart and later takes out the pinion gear. I think it is worth it to remove the clutch shaft to at least inspect it. You'll need the cam like seal that are on the differential output shafts. I can't think of anything else right now I got to look at the parts diagrams later this week.
Some of this is greek to me, if you could get me a list of part numbers for the stuff you want me to get, that would really help... but I believe Bruce has all the "hard parts" I will probably need. I'll gauge the synchro's, but i'm confident that they are probably ok, the car has always shifted very clean and smoothly. I wont go cheap and stupid on this, i'd rather be safe than sorry... I only wanna do this ONCE! We may also be replacing some clutch components and possibly the flywheel... i'm trying to get Bruce to trade me a stock one that he has, for my track modified one... maybe at least a partial trade!
OK, I'll try and get some #'s. Ernie may want the flywheel. Also, I wonder if the FW bruce has is mine? If so it has less than 500miles on it before I put my experimental FW in my car and raced it. If so that FW bruce has is perfect twin disc unit.
That I don't know, I hope it is, but I want it REALLY REALLY bad!! I rekon i'll try to find a way to buy it If I have too!
Depending on my work schedule 7th & 8th could be good for me, maybe even the 9th too. But I really won't know for sure until about a week before hand. So long as you have all the tools needed, we can have the gearbox out in day. You'll need to make sure you have the proper size allen socket for the bolts on the CV joints, and a BIG crescent wrench to disconnect the oil pipe.
He's not kidding about the toaster oven and rubber band. Make sure the rubber band is the fat wide type, you know the whitish colored ones. And don't spend much on the toaster oven. Just go to a thrift store and buy an old one for a few bucks, don't buy a new one. You think we're joking, but we aren't. Those are "especiale" Ferrari tools.
Generic tools will not be an issue, but I dont have the ring nut tool. I never thought he was kidding! I will have the toaster oven (gonna borrow one), strudel, and plenty of fat rubber bands! We've still gotta land on mutual dates... I dont know if FBB & Bruce are available on weekdays.
Steve, Working on dates for the 3 of us but worst case you drive the box to cali. It is either we fly/drive or you drive so it is not much difference. Anyway, I think it best you take the box out if you are able. We can guess at the bearings you need but you can get a glimpse of the internals when the inspection plates are off. You may not know what to look for but you can video us or post pics to us and we can at least see if you have things like broken gears or pinion gear etc... Gears take the longest to get and I know bruce has some gears but half the gears he had are in Ernie's gearbox. Going to Vegas would be fun. There is lots to do there.
Well, beggers cant be choosers, that's for sure... but I would really rather pay to get you guys out here, not only for the repair, but I was really hoping for some reassembly help. Its a heck of a lot easier to tear something apart than it is to put it back together. Me and my best friend Phil (who will be helping me tear the car down) can do the work, but some expert supervision would make me feel A LOT better and more confident!
I wouldn't mind coming down to help out and see how you guys put it together. I also am doing my tranny now and the extra know-how will really help. Depending on the date, i may be able to come down a day early to help take it out of the car and/or start disasembly. -daniel
So far, it looks like Bruce & Ernie are coming to Vegas on April 7th & 8th. I know this may be a problem for some guys considering that is a Wednesday and Thursday, but anyone who can make it to Vegas would be very welcome to hang out! Daniel, thanks for the offer of help, I'd totally take you up on it, but I need to have the gearbox out well before they come, in case I need to order any parts.
Steve, I thought about a parts list but decided there is no way to give you one. You have to do an inspection which EB will do on the 7th. You can talk to them about parts. We talked about you box yesterday when the guys were over. Like I posted before I'll be on spring break trip with family so EB will be in vegas. They were talking sidebearings but while it is very possible you need those too since ferrari did not seem to stake the lockrings down well, I don't think that is your problem. To me the first picture looks like bearing cage. The cage bearings if you look at the ricambi site there are exploded parts diagrams. You can see the caged bearings are all under gears on the shafts. So if you got cage you got a blown bearing somewhere on the shaft which means complete teardown. You were having some vibration or something issues iirc with the solid flywheel that you do not like. I think it is possible that your gearbox is just fine and the bearing inside the box that the input shaft rides on could be blown up. Perhaps there are some vibrational issues with your solid flywheel if it has not been balanced as a unit which could beat on this bearing. Once the box is out it is easy enough to find this out. If you are lucky and this is where it is from then you can get away with an easy bearing to replace and just side bearings if your layshaft and main shaft are loose. OTOH the paranoid would just take the whole box apart and rebuild it. I would be more extreme if racing it. As a sub 10kmile/yr car its just parts and the box is easy to remove.
