Sad day two months back. Got side swiped. There's one last V12 in the world unless someone wants to make a fun project car! Loved my year with the Ferrari but went to check off more checkboxes on my travels of the car world.

    New boxes checked...
    British
    Convertible
    "Doors go up"

Moved on to the McLaren 720S Spider so it's bittersweet in the end. Loved my time with the F12 but other than that V12 sound if I'm honest the 720S is just another level of performance in comparison to an F12.

You were lucky it was not further back, I assume it is a write off ?

Yes it was a "write off" I was made whole car deemed "total loss" and was paid out.

It was a shame. I feel bad for the car it was a high spec great example last model year as a 2017. I will say most exotics are not crash tested for safety but in general it's impressive what modern safety equipment can do that I walked away from this one. F12 shielded me well all things considered.

It's bittersweet. I loved the F12 but since the 720S debut in 2018 I've always wanted one. I stood away for multiple reasons but one door closed and another opened and here we are....

A police van on blue lights went through red lights and hit an F12 where I live, very similar damage as yours, they rebuilt it at great expense .

I’ve had 2 different accidents this year. Guy drove into my rental in Hawaii head on and a lady drove into me while I was riding my Ducati. Totaled both times, but lucky to be alive and mostly fully recovered. Things can be replaced as long as you’re ok. Let me know how your 720 experience goes. I’ve been considering picking up a Spider as well but the maintenance and reliability concerns have prevented me from pulling the trigger on one

Ouch! Looks like a serious sideswipe. Hope you were spared of any damage.

You mentioned the vehicle was deemed total loss, what was the appraised damage amount and what amount did they value your car at? (Assuming it was not an agreed value policy)

Also curious to know who your carrier was but understand if you want to redact that for personal reasons. Only ask as there are not many discussions which showcase carriers at the time of a loss; it’s nice to see which carriers hold up to their commitment/contract for their policyholders!

Ouch! I bought it with a warranty as a CPO (Certified Pre Owned) so $0 deductible warranty for one year and option to extend. Plan is to extend. If it's in shop more than on the road then I'll sell it while warranty still active and move on. Hopefully not because it's the best car I've ever driven/owned. Luxury race car for the streets is a simple summary. So low to the ground, the induction noises, the steering feedback, the handling, is all insane. Knock on wood no electronic gremlins yet...can't say there weren't plenty with the F12 lol.

    Yes total loss
    Not agreed value
More than fair on the ACV and they held up. I'll PM you.

There's not much lag and regardless has way more torque than the F12 and weighs less. Different experience. Not my frist turbo car as the F12 was also not my only NA car. Turbos are small enough they spool pretty quick.

A British mid-engine turbo V8 and an Italian mid-front NA V12 are opposites. Really nothing in common and not typically cross-shopped.

They all are, otherwise they cannot become road legal. I am glad you walked away unscathed and that's what matters. Enjoy your new McLaren!

    I cross shopped them. :p

The F12 (like the 720S) were checkmarks for me.

Ferrari F12 helped me get the
    V12
    Italian built
    Front engine mid mount

720S as I said above got me British, "doors go up" and a convertible as I never had any of those three configurations. Other than a Porsche 911 (for rear engine rear mounted) I literally checked off every possible box in engine type, drivetrain type, country of origin, induction, etc. Obviously never will own a 16 cylinder or care about a 5 cylinder but other than that now I've checked them all with the various cars I've owned throughout the years. I4, V6, V8, V10, V12, EV, FWD, RWD, AWD, USA, JDM, Italy, Germany, Britain, manual, auto, DCT auto, FF, FR, MR, (missing RR) for engine placement, turbo, supercharge, NA. In 20 years I think I hit a bunch of various performance cars from various manufactures and experienced what various have to offer and what they lack.

If curious though, I was considering a Ferrari 488 Spider over the 720S so those were "cross shopped" as was the 992 911 Turbo S before I picked the 720S.

I mean they don't usually get the NHTSA crash ratings because they didn't crash enough of them. Either way, any crash can be fatal but I must say the cabin held itself together there was no ingress into the cabin on that passenger side.

What if you were buying new. Would you still seriously consider a 911 vs. a $500k F12? That's when you are serious in my book. These are emotional buys.

I'm confused by your statement. New vs used doesn't matter. I've only bought two cars new. I find your money goes further with a slightly used model unless you're getting something ultra rare and desirable. Price of car doesn't necessarily determine the purchaser's possible choices of cars. It'll make a ceiling cap at the maximum amount someone wants to spend it doesn't dictate the only cars someone is cross shopping. Hey, whatever floats your boat though! :D

New the cost gap between models is accentuated hence my question. Perhaps there is someone out there that would cross shop a pedestrian 911 against a flagship Ferrari but I seriously haven't met them and doubt I ever will.

I don't know, I've got a good friend who wanted a "GT" type car and looked at 812, Lussos, Aston DBS and Vantage before deciding he wants to order a Turbo S. He admits he doesn't care about sound as much as service dept/warranty.

I am not so sure about that . I have owned several several Porsches and a 911 TURBOS is a very nice car for a GT car while I love the sound of my F12 and everything else about it; a 911 TURBOs is not so bad..it is rock solid and very reliable ..

  21. A TTS does not have the drama that an F12 does.

The inline 6 in the Porsche, as great as it is, is like a squirt gun compared to the V12 howitzer in the Ferrari.

On paper, the performance numbers may be comparable (the TTS might even be better than the F12), and both might be fine GT cruisers, but there is a certain je ne sais quoi about the V12 in the F12.

I'm a 911 turbo lover and ran them all from the 930 3.0 to the 992TTS oem and Techart GTStreet, still own 2 finely tuned and love them. They are perfect, reliable, can be very very fast. But I have to admit the F12 gives much more emotion, especially with a good alignement, MPSS4S, 200cell cats and a Xpipe, way more.
