Had my windshield replaced & needed a new inspection sticker. Had the car inspected....failed emissions. It seems even though it's a 25 year old "Classic" (1983 308qv)...it's not exempt from emissions. See here Bummer. It's getting "tuned" now. Let's see how it does.
Sorry to hear that you gotta run your baby thru emissions, that does suck!! I'm sure that she'll pass next time!! Cheer up!!! Spring began today!!!
Clyde, if Cara didn't have bad luck, she wouldn't have any luck at all!! I hope that she passes, you haven't gotten to drive in a long time, do you remember how to drive a manual transmission?
I must have missed something. Usually when I had a windshield replaced the place that did it removed my inspection sticker and placed it back on the new windshield. They had a method of doing this without voiding the sticker. Did the old sticker run out?
Hi Clyde, Really sorry to hear about that. My 308 is over 25 years and I did not have to get inspections (ie: emissions, etc) - I did however register/ insure the car as Collector vehicle in NJ to make sure I am ok with the law ... especially in NJ as we know. I use my 308 as a weekend driver with 3000 miler per year limit. I might be wrong, but if your car is 25 years and older in NJ it does not make you exempt from emissions automatically. To fully qualify, you must have it registered/ insured as a collector or historic vehicle. I read up on this like crazy before I bought my 308. Its a Steel '76. Not sure if this helps any. Best regards, Mike.
Mike, your right on the money. I would need to register & insure the car with QQ plates to bypass inspection. As it happens, through a whole day of careful tinkering, the car passed emissions. The shop figures from sitting so much over the last year caused the issue. Also, I also had a replacement air pump waiting to go in but I hadn't planned on failing emissions so I didn't have it installed yet (a to-do for this Sunday. Is there a better way to spend a Sunday than tinkering with your baby??? Well, maybe driving her) This same shop is where I always take it for inspection. I'd recommend them for anyone needing help in this area. (PM me if you want the name) Roger, yeah last year was a VERY bad year for Cara.
Clyde - Consider getting the car registered/inspected as a "collector" car. I beleive the car needs to be 15 years old and has a yearly mileage restriction (3000 I think). The up side is that there is no emission testing. Go to the NJ DMV site to locate specific requirements... We should get together some day since my office is in Totowa and it looks like you live in Wayne...
Thanks for the thoughts on Classic registration...but I can't live with the 3000 mile yearly limit. I usually clock 8K or so per year. Yes! Mike (76Steel) is in the area as are a few others. It's about time Jersey represents! Do I hear a Bear-Mountain run for the Spring car shows on Wed. nights? Anybody know when those car meetings start? Should be soon. Spring is in the air!
Sounds fun; I've never done the Bear Mountain shows. David North who is very involved in the local FCA region works across the street from me. I've never met him, but I'm sure we could twist his arm as well.
I've met Dave & seen him (frequently) at Classic Coach and he does live locally. He's a true enthusiast. I'm sure it won't take much arm-twisting. There's Also Greg G, Rob Ferretti, JDogg, Neil, and a few others who have been known to drop by the Bear Mountain show. at 500+ cars on a nice night...it's the place to be. Hey Noah, when's GDC going to represent at one of the nights???
Screw the shows... lets go for a drive homeboy! I have the collector car registration but knew annual 3K max wldnt work for you. But since its Cara's last year, what do you think the penalty wld be for exceeding it wld be [grin].
