Went and done it...

    Got started on my training a few days ago. I had never been in a 172 till I started this. Fact is I've only been in one small plane (150) for a total of maybe 45 min before this. Had a death grip on the yoke most of the time. Biggest problem I had was that I made everything more complicated than it was. It was pretty hazy and we couldn't make out a horizon most of the time.
    I loosened up a bit and managed ta get a little better sense of getting the plane trimmed out plus some throttle down gliding turns and banking. Instructor left me in charge of the rudder from the get go. Had a quartering tail wind for landing and I made that look really bad..
    All in all I got hollared at a lot but ,it was justified..and we got down alive...
    Went up again last Sunday for round number 2. I asked a lot of questions before we took off to try and make things work better this time. Personally I thought I had a little better clue as to how to go about it. Worked on trimming again,steeper banking, changing altitude. Had a nice partly cloudy day so I finally had a horizon to work by, that helped a lot. We were working at 1500' and making a banking right turn.......and the plane started vibrating a bit. Instructor said to turn it toward home,so I did. Shaking continued while the Instructor fiddled with the fuel,carbheat and some other stuff to try to smooth things out. We could see the hanger in the distance and thought we had it made...Then aloud knock and then the picture was differant. Really vibrating BAD now. He said we need ta look for a place ta put it down because we weren't going to make it back without tearing something up. Well.....seeing as I have managed to rack up a grand total of maybe 1.75 hrs of log time.....I let the instructor have control ;)
    Had a choice of a turnrow or a county rd. He opted for the road. Had ta clear a secondary line coming off of a transformer across the road and set down between the primary power lines on both sides of the road after that...all with a cross wind from the right. We managed to come to a halt long before any road signs.
    I told him he looked like he's done that a dozen times before. He said it wasn't his first.
    I wonder what we're going ta do the third time up?.........

    Do not - I repeat - do not - continue flying under these conditions. IMHO, please find some other airport and arrangements - nuf said.

    I agree with Roy. Get somewhere else in a hurry. Do not continue with this outfit and instructor. Getting yelled at when you are a new student or an old student is not teaching you anything but fear and confusion. Drop these people! I had some forceful instructors but only after I had a bunch of hours under my belt and knew what they were trying to do but when I was green, I had nothing but calm herding and helpful directions. Engine failure and equipment problems should NEVER be a part of a beginning student's experiences. Get somewhere else !

    Now fellas,
    Don't go thinking this guy was sitting there screeming at me at the top of his lungs. He was correcting me as he should have,and without earphones you HAVE ta holler! As for the engine failure.....a valve for some unknown reason gave up. We'll find out later why. Can happen any time. Not likely, but you should know yourself there are a lot of parts in those engines and you better have a plan at all times. This drove that point home early.
    I've known this instructor for over forty years. People come from all over the world to get thier commercial ticket by him. I know of several other instructors , many fixed wing pilots and helo pilots who all claim he's one of the best there is. There's not a foot of possible landing area near here that he doesn't know about or what condition it is in.
    I've got relatives that were pilots in the military and know several stunt pilots. they all say the same thing..He might be gruff at times.....but he knows what to do and when to do it ,better than anybody.....

    One disturbing question.... Why were you landing in the wrong direction??

    You should be landing into the wind. Not with a tailwind of any sort.
    Instructor is responsible for teaching you correct procedure, from the get go.
    not giving you command of the rudder, or allowing a new student to land downwind.

    Maybe I'd be looking for another Instructor...?
    Will reserve judgement on the aircraft breakdown for now, as that can happen to the best schools, but combined with wrong way landings, I'd be asking a whole lot more questions....

    Others will pipe in here.

    I'll grant you that Switches and I may have a very limited understanding of the circumstances involved, and not see the whole picture, but we got good instincts (that's why we're old pilots).

    I guess I better clarify this a little more..as for the tail wind....We have only one runway and one taxiway. While we were going around for final there was a slight quarter headwind, more of a breeze really. In the little time it took to come around there was a slight change in direction . When I say I made it look bad, those are my words not his.
    Rudder control. While this was my first venture in fixed wing this is not my first time out operating aircraft. I do have a some unlogged time in a Bell jetranger. He knows this and gave me slack according to what he could see me doing. There was never a point at which he could not take over.
    I came to this board so I could watch,listen and learn.You all no dought have lots of experiance . Some more than others. In my life I've found out you can learn something from everyone you watch,be it what you should do or should not do..
    When I look back at my post,it seems to me I didn't paint as clear a picture as I could have and I see where you are coming from. You're looking out for me.
    I do thank you guys for the feedback.That is why I came here.
