And the salesman kept trying to get me to sell him my 3.2, which I thought was hilarious. Actually, he seemed less interested in selling me the Porsche than he did in buying my car. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Shoulda kept yours The 997 was awesome, I'm looking forward to owning one. I like it more than the air cooled 911SC I owned some years back.
Hi Dizengoff, I had the same 997 silver coupe you are looking to buy and let me tell ya, that car is sweet and very reliable! Look for a good example, and the later years 08 and on would be preferred as the IMS issues have been sorted. I'm looking at a 991 or a clean Panamera for my next Porsche at the moment. All the best, Mike
Thanks for the suggestion, Mike. I don't want to drive the 991...I'm afraid I'll love it too much. Same goes for the Ferrari 599. Regarding that IMS issue...it's a tricky one. From what I've seen the failure rate is about 6% of cars. I'm going to check out the later 997.2 as well as the first gen cars. If I can get a first gen 997 at a good price, then install that LN Engineering upgrade I might go that route...OTOH I hear the gen 2 997's hold their own against the 991's.
The IMS is overblown - It was beefed up for 2006 and then again in 2007 if I recall correctly. The '05's are really the only ones that have a greater failure rate, and still LOW at that. It *can* happen* to the 2006-2008's but the chances are incredibly low from my research over the years. Don't let that stop anyone from getting a great car at a great price.
Tempting, but I'm going to stick with the regular 997. I'd think US spec ones would be cheaper given the price disparity between US and Europe? Maybe not? That's kind of what I'd noticed too. The survey on Rennlist seems to suggest the same thing--about 6% failure rate, most (all?) of it limited to 2005 and lower years.
996 and or all twin turbo models do not have the IMS issue. I have a 996 twin turbo GT2 it has the metzger engine and does not have the IMS issues. And I might add that the twin turbo is one hell of a power house.
997.2 and at least an S model in my very biased opinion. (That's what I own 😃. I think they're a nice compromise been the larger, GT nature of the 991 and three more raw earlier models (I don't track my Porsche). You can still find some with CPO, which adds two more years to warranty. And, they seem to be devoid of the various IMS issues that plague earlier water cooled models. However, you really can't wrong with a 911 IMO. I got one as a stepping stone to a Ferrari, and two years and 20 K miles later (mine is not a DD), I wouldn't trade mine for the world. Love it. Good luck in your hunt...T
Just to clarify, 996 turbo is Metzger/no IMS issues however naturally aspirated 996 is M96 engine/has IMS issues. (maybe not what you meant but read to me as though you wrote all 996 was without IMS issue)
I love the appearance of the 997.2 and the 991. I have a personal rule for myself, though, that any depreciating asset purchase has to be <$50k. So that pretty much rules out 997.2, 996 TT, and anything else that goes over the $50k mark. So 997.1 is where I'll be looking. Fortunately there seems to be quite a bit of inventory out there, so I think I can negotiate a little more on prices.
Seems like a good deal... If you're ok with the blue leather. https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/182058822756
Can't you get a good 996 turbo for around 50k now? After test driving a 997.1 C4S I ended up going with a 95 C2.
I like the white. There's an '07 at a dealer downtown that's white. I'm going to test drive it soon All the 996 turbos I've seen are over $50k. For coupes, anyway. Cabs are less, but I prefer the coupe.
No doubt they're all great cars. And lots to choose from. I think if I were going to do it again, I'd probably go as far back as 996 generation and do all the IMS, RMS, etc. upgrades proactively. Post pics when you locate your car. Good luck...T
Agree, 997.2 is the way to go. You should be able to pick up an early 997.2 (2009 model) for less than $50k. Look around. I agree with Tom that the upgrades in the 997.2 make it worthwhile.
I am not sure. I was under the impression all turbos were without the IMS issue. 996 twin turbo coupe with under 30 k miles runs well over 50 k for a good example.
IMS Issue is over blown. Basically it effects 911's into late model year 2005 - early 2006 if you look up the IMS class action law suit you can enter the car's VIN to see if its an effected car. starting in 2007 IMS was not an issue, and in Gen 2 cars there is no IMS. I have a 07 997 - love it, great every day car, fun and fast and the got the 911 looks just right if you ask me. the 991 is nice on the inside, but they made it too squat for my likes. the 997 has just that perfect stance and the rear of the car looks so muscular. Yes all turbos are without IMS issue. I'm seeing a bunch of manual 996tt with 25-45k miles in the 50k range.
50 k for a good example under 30 k miles is a pretty good deal on any twin turbo 996 as long as it is a good example.. Over 30 k miles and over 45 k to purchase is a bit high IMO. X50 package makes it way up there.
