I joined the list of Boxer owners a few months ago with the purchase of a 1976 365 - the car is fitted with 9" rear wheels with 265 width tyres & 225 width fitted to the front 7" rims.

I have a comprehensive file of receipts & receipts for the fittment of the oversize tyres ( at previous owners request ) but no record of the wheels being purchased seperately - the previous owner for 20 years says he never changed the wheels and the garage who has looked after the car said the wheels were on it as is as long as they have known the car.

You don't have to look too hard to find magazine / book pictures of a 365 with 9" rears but no mention of anything other than 7" wheels as standard.

So the question is were 9" rear wheels an option on later cars or a period mod ?

    regards

All 365 Boxers came with 15x7."Chromdora's, fitted front and rear. However, back in the day, many owners, including myself, upgraded to the 15x9" wheels, as fitted on the 512bb cars. These wider wheels were cheap, plentiful and helped to keep the rear end planted..Also, a few 365 owners "upgraded" to the 512bb front "chin spoiler" to help alleviate the "lift" at higher speeds.

They went to the wider rim on the 512 to handle the massive power increase over the lack-luster performance of the 365 :).

Actually, Ferrari found that due to the lack of any real driver experience in the later Boxers, particularly based on the "off-road" excursions ever so prevalent in the Canadian market, that wider rims and tires on these "modestly", higher performance cars were essential in the interest of foreign diplomacy.

They also realized that the bullet proof clutches and differentials of the 512's that support the locomotive-like torque of the engine would be best complimented with the wider rims, lol.

As this extra equipment made it easier to get back on to the road!

LOL, that pic of the guy having a smoke as he refects on his boxer in the ditch was actually taken about an hour from me here in St Catherines Ontario. Dumb canadain boxer owners, cant forget the tire chains, hence the large wheel openings.
