As the title says McLaren is loosing it's premier sponsor this weekend, Friday is the last day they'll run with West tobacco advertising. It closes an eight year partnership. The EU ban on Tobacco advertising goes into effect on race day and I'm sure teams have bodywork and crew uniforms with and without advertising.

Does anyone know how the McLarens will be liveried on Saturday and Sunday? Will they run in orange!?

    LOL

Especially true for party boy Kimi.

Maybe once the tobacco ad on the car is gone, it will be less likely to go up in smoke?

You guys know what i don't understand? Why is it OK to put booze adverts on a damned racecar but not tobacco. How many times has anyone died from smoking and driving?

    Good point.

Budweiser on the Williams, Johnny Walker on the Mc Laren. Not a good trend.

To me the whole ban on tobacco ads is ludicrous to begin with. I'm not a smoker, but I sure am happy that big tobacco sponsors the teams with their money.

It was no more than 10 years ago where I remember reading about how the big shots of F1 wouldn't permit the advertising of spirits on the cars. They felt it was in poor taste to have racing/driving associated with liquor. Things change.

There was a proposal a little while ago to have a self imposed restriction on all Alcohol (spirits) and tobacco companies sponsoring F1 teams. In affect the F1 teams would have an internal agreement. McLaren and Ferrari were the first ones to say HELL NO! Williams sponsored by Budweiser also refused the idea.

The EU has a tough stance on any advertising of tobacco that targets kids. Since kids can turn on the TV and watch F1, the EU has decided to restrict tobacco advertising, period!

In my opinion the EU will target drunk driving next. Alcohol sponsorship probably will not last long.

Teams need to persue sponsorship from global brands like
    Intel
    Oracle
    Sony
    Samsung
    Pepsi
    Coca-cola
    Nokia

I was completely against alcohol sponsorship in F1 before and I still am!

SHAME ON MCLAREN AND WILLIAMS FOR PROMOTING DRUNK DRIVING!!!!!

You sir are an idiot if you truely stand by that statement.

SHAME ON FERRARI FOR PROMOTING LUNG CANCER!!

That type of tripe can be said about many sports in life, and many things in general, but what you do with the product is up to YOU.

So if you choose to drink drive, dont blame it on F1. Blame it on your lack of operational brain cells.

I think we should just ban advertising ... this would then enable Bernie (Mr Stupid) to get rid of the wings.

Like all sports, professionalisim and thus money is killing it ... lets go back to racing for fun, competitiveness and company pride.

Yeah sure the lap times would slow, but I bet the racing would be heaps better. Atleast we would have drivers that want to race, instead of just playing out their playboy status ... ie. Trulli, Fisi and all the other lame ducks on the grid.

    Wishful thinking :)

F1 w/o advertising is a closed chapter - we cannot go back now ... Who will pay Schumi's 60MM salary :)

Rather than fiddling with F1, we would watch SCCA or some other series with amateur racers (not profesional) or better still watch historic racing...

Agree ... except please do not include historic racing in the list of real racing. This over attention is causing the drivers to get big heads and forget that in their case the car DOES come first.

Again if you want to be a hero ... get out of the classic/historic car and find a modern series and go RACING :)

Why not? ... that is the original colour of McLaren racing cars, and would be absolutely cool.

It is actually New Zealands racing colour, hence why McLarens were painted that colour.

A few years ago the debuted (in testing) the pre-West McLaren in orange and it looked fncken stunning.

    Heres hoping.

    McLaren's color is orange.
