Don't start that business -- start a lending business for fractional vehicle ownership!

They've had these in England for a while, and I guess they are only coming over to the States. The problem I've seen is that it would great if you really could drive a different car every day, or every week even. But you don't get anywhere near enough points to do that. If you could actually be driving the cars, then I could see spending the crazy money to join. But if you add up the points, that 15K or whatever it is gets you a car for like one weekend a month or something like that, especially if you even once pick one of the higher end cars. Not worth it at all, IMO.

but we are not talking about joining one of these clubs.

We are talking about EC starting one of these clubs. And as board members, guess who gets first dibs on the new car inductees? :)

It's not really a fractional ownership program in the true sense -- it's just a rental company under a different guise.

There's not much difference (except semantically) between paying $15,000 for 250 points and then "spending" and "replenishing" those points and paying a per-day fee to rent the cars. They're just pooling the rental fees and getting people to pre-pay for a big chunk up front. I.e. -- a class-A car costs 25 points ($1500) per day, and a class-C car costs 7 points ($175) per day.

I wouldn't be surprised if the reason they're doing it that way is a not-so-sneaky way to get around the horribly difficult insurance market for exotic rentals ("no no no...we're not renting the cars...we're a fractional ownership company!")

It's just a more complicated way of doing rentals in a market (LA) with several very established players. They do have nicer cars than the existing players though...
