I put this together to print out and put in your car in case you are in an accident. I sent copies to all my family and they put copies in their glovebox. After an accident, you can be very emotional and forget what to do. This will help to give you guidance. It is a work in progress and I welcome ideas for improvement. I also added a section just for towing the Ferrari (it may be specific to my Ferrari).
Please no jokes about how anal this is...you don't have to read it!

If you are in an accident.
Stop - Failure to stop after an accident is a felony if someone is injured. Failure to stop after an accident is a misdemeanor if no one is injured and there is only property damage. Make sure Everyone is safe. Do not make an accident worse by standing in traffic. Give CPR out of harms way.

CALL 911 - Report an accident and advise if anyone is injured. Take an ambulance to the hospital if you are injured. then call IMPORTANT HELPING PERSON GOES HERE. Put on your hazard lights.

Safety - If you're not injured, protect the scene with flares if possible. If your car is on a street with fast moving traffic, wait for the police outside of your car, off the road and on the side away from your car, just in case your car is struck by another car. Do not stand in front of your car and do not stand with your back to the traffic. You may have an emergency kit with flares, etc. in your trunk.

Police - Insist that a police accident report is made when the police arrive; cooperate with the police but do not make admissions or give opinions. If there are any witnesses on your behalf, get their name, address & telephone number and ask them to give a statement to the police officer. Get a Police Accident Report # and officer badge number.

Identification - Get the name & address of all other drivers and registered owners of all other vehicles involved in the accident. Also get the license plate numbers, VIN (Vehicle Identification # if you can) and the state of registration for all other vehicles involved in the accident. If a 2 piece truck is involved in the accident, get the license plate number, VIN & state of both the cab and the trailer. If the driver's name is different from the name of the insured, establish what the relationship is and take down the name and address for each individual. Also make a written description of each car, including year, make, model and color — and the exact location of the collision and how it happened. Ask for the insurance companies and policy numbers for drivers involved in the car accident.

Take notes - to help you remember all of the facts leading up to the accident. Remain calm. Take deep breaths to relax. Write down as many details as you can. Time, date, weather conditions…anything else you notice about the scene and the amount of traffic. If you have a camera, take pictures of the scene, the other car, the other person, and you and your car.

Give out your info --Give them your License number, your phone number XXXXXXXX, and your insurance name and number on a piece of paper.

Do not admit fault for the car accident or discuss the car accident with anyone other than the police and your claims representative. Stay calm and resist the temptation to get upset or argue with the other driver, even if you believe the car accident was his or her fault. Do not sign statements regarding fault or promises to pay for damage.
If another party offers to pay your deductible, don’t sign anything releasing him or her from further responsibility. By releasing the other party, you jeopardize your insurance company’s subrogation right, and the company may refuse to pay for damage to your car.

IF YOUR FERRARI NEEDS TO BE TOWED--360 Ferrari
    1) Call _________________ they will tow the car…tell them you have Ferrari and need a flat bed tow truck.
    2) Get the tow hook from the tool kit in the front trunk. Screw it all the way into the opening in the front of the grille on the driver’s side. Use this to tow the car up on a flat bed truck.
    3) If you absolutely cannot get a flatbed tow truck, and you need to lift the car (not recommended), then only lift the rear axle.
    4) Leave the keys in it when towing so that the steering wheel will not lock and so that you can illuminate the safety lights.
    5) Turn off the alarm by disarming the alarm (2 beeps) and then open and close one door. This will turn off the alarm.

Any ideas for improvement? (I hope this someday helps someone to deal with the stress of an accident.)

    Best, Kevin.

    Good post....

It is a very good idea to take pictures of everything.

Any cars - different sides, license plate, vin, everything you can
    All people in the cars
    Many of the area.

Pictures will help refresh your memory and assist in case you wrote something down wrong or can't read what was written.

Having pictures is what saved me when I was hit from behind. The other drivers insurance company wanted to dispute and fight even though the police wrote on the report the other driver was at fault. Then I provided my insurance company with all my pictures and his insurance company paid the claim.

you know it's amazing, and i like how you put the STOP! as the first thing to do. my buddy had just parked his truck at homedepot and a elderly gent was backing out across the aisle from him. he went to far and bump into the back of my buddys truck. no biggie but here is where the fun starts, the guy gets out of his jeep and LEAVES the truck in reverse! the jeep now umaned and in gear procedes to continue to bash in my buddies truck. the guy is stunned and unable to comprehend what to do.

thankfully my buddy takes this in stride and walks over and puts the jeep in park. it scares me to think what would have happend if this was in the street or if there were children around. the other people on the road these days truely do scare me at times!

Good Post, kevin, but I would amend #1 to: "admit nothing and deny everything"!

Thats actually a good point. Insurance companies always say not to admit anything at all, not even say "sorry" as it indicates fault.

I was involved in a particular car accident litigation about 16 years ago.

The one who caused the accident stated at the scene in the presence of three persons:

"I am sorry. It was all my fault"!

Thank you very much, because the issue of liability was then well-established and it was only the damage portion that had to be determined.

Had that statement appeared on a police report, it would not have been admissible as being "hearsay". However, since the three persons who originally personally "observed" the statements subsequently stated this in their depositions, the statements were direct and were fully admissible.

    Admit nothing: deny everything.

If you think you have a moral obligation to talk, get your checkbook out!

One thing that I was taught to remember if I'm in an accident or on the scene of an accident - make sure your ignition switch is turned off! If it's still on, and there has been damage to part of the fuel system, your fuel pump may be dumping gas out where it could be ignited. Of course, this is standard practice with race cars - the safety workers find the "kill switch" right away and make sure the ignition is disabled.

Its also good to keep a ziplock bag with a notepad, disposable camera, pen, and all that in your car in case of an accident, so you'll be able to take pictures, and write down anything you need to write down. Great information too.

    Good post

I was in an accident today with my mate in his alfa gtv. Some guy refused to give way and was in the wrong. Minor panel damage. At the scene the guy refused to admit he'd done the wrong thing, but later on phoned up and admitted he was in the wrong. We grabbed all insurance details etc, and its being worked out by insurance companies now.
