Hey guys! Right now im trying to decide between a 997t, the one at roslyn Porsche(200mls with the ascot brown interior(mucho carbon fiber which i like) and the 2003 360 at ferrari LI(3k mls daytona seats, shields,f1 etc...). Two things i value in a sports car are tracking around a slightly bumpy corner( because most corners do have imperfections) and steering percision.( as noted on the top gear thread) I have never owned a ferrari and would love to. I will probably decide late tomorrow afternoon. I've posted on the maserati forum about a year ago (with pics of a 2005 coupe i had, posted under my sons name) Anyhow, if anyone has any comments i'd appreciate it.

I have had five porsches before I bought my 360 four weeks ago. I have had turbos, C4S and my last porsche was a GT3. If you are a track guy, you are waisting your money with turbo. GT3 is the most amazing Track car I have ever driven. I would never buy any other porsche than GT3. That is real porsche.
Now, transferring to 360. It is very fun to drive. the noise experience is great. You should get a after market exhaust (a must) because the oem is nice but quiet. The ride is much lower (it is lower than GT3) but same stifness. Quality is, aaahhhh, I prefer German. But, I am more excited to drive my 360 than I was with GT3. Beautiful car to look at. Not a track car. Tires too small unless you change to 19s for bigger tires, then 19s are not track prefered.
If you want to go to the track, get a GT3 or if you have the money get a Stradale.
If you have a track car already, get the 360 and you will never be bored driving it.
    Good luck

There is no replacement for the sight, sound, and pride of owning a Ferrari (so I've heard.....).

    The Ferrari is a great car, I owned a 360 and now a 430.
However, for the track and its imperfections - Porsche. Best

Thanks for a quick reply, its not going to be tracked. which steering is more precise? (So far i think my QP was the most precise while maintaing a compliant ride). I'd ask for a test drive but the roads still have some salt. Back in 1995 i had a 928S4.

I have a 997TT and a 2004 360 modena, both great but different cars. Better performance from the porsche by a wide margin but none of the exotic sounds you get from an F car. Both great just different. Ask for Will as Bentely LI he knows quite a bit about F cars.

it's a preference thing but 360 has a more fluidic/lighter/direct steering feel but the 997's have a heavier maybe more artificial feel

Thanks for all the replies. I just watched the Top Gear segment on the F430 and the Porsche Turbo and now I'm on my way to the Ferrari and Porsche dealerships. I'm leaning towards the Porsche, but my son is insisting on the Ferrari music.(This is my son's sn)

    thanks again,
    Patrick.

    Patrick,

    I own a 996 Porsche and a F430F1 Ferrari. I traded in a 2003 360 Modena 6 speed.

You can not make a bad choice. if you are going to use the car for fun and to go places or weekend trips take the Porsche. I would go for the 997 over the 996 but both are great cars. My Porsche has been perfect since I picked it up late 1998. The cost of maintainig it has been modest. The new 997 has a 2 year or 20,000 miles oil change frequency. The 996 has a 15,000 miles or once a year whichever comes first. it is hard to beat that.

The Ferrari drives a little better and the power is more and the sound is well Ferrari. I do not think the 911S especially with the "X: package gives up much or anything over the 360. The chasis tuning is more race car on the Ferrari and the accel is more explosive for many reasons including the dry clutch. i would avoid a 360 model F1 go for the 6 speed. If you get a F430 either transmission is good.

The turbo Porsche is powerful but the 4 wheel drive detracts from the handling. If you like twisties I would do the Ferrari over the Turbo Porsche. The 911S (997) would be a tough call! The cost of ownership for the Ferrari will be higher even if you only do the schedules mainteance.

AS an every day driver the Porsche, as a enthusat the Ferrari is hard to beat. besides both are great cars.

Good luck on whatever you do.

    Lee

Ferrari steering is VERY precise. It drives as if on tracks. Honestly. Even professioanl drivers will agree to that.
But it seems the the new 997 Turbo has even a more precise steering feel. However, these minor differences will definitely not be vital to us. We are not pro drivers and we are not race drivers.
    NO TRACKING = FERRARI

360 over a turbo but if you decide to get a p-car a gt3 over a turbo anyday
if you are set on a p-car give a gt3 a look you can get a new one spec it to your linking instead.

the rwd, sound, lighter, better feel, NA higher revving engine and gt3 almost as daily usable as a tt unlike in the 996 due to PASM

i would take a carrera S over a turbo too awd, turbo lag, heavy

    but that's me

The 997TT is a great car, I only have about 2 hrs seat time, but have owned 2 360s (a CS currently). My opinion is decide based on who you are and what you want.

To me right now, Porsche (with the exception of the GT3) is a BMW alternative. For my commuter car, I last decided between an 650i and MB CLK55 and a 997 cab.

FWIW I took the MB, because the 997 cab doesn't have space in the rear for two small boys and the 650i is rubbish. I see the 997TT as an alternative to an M6.

If its your only sports car and you need it to be multi-purpose, you need to decide to go against the grain and put miles on a Ferrari (I have 16K on my CS). If this is a toy, I'd say go F-car every time. Money wise if its a toy and your usage is 2-5K a year, you'd do much better on the F-car.

Also FWIW, my 360s have been more reliable than the last Porsche I owned. That had the roof fail 3 times, and the engine main seal fail twice amongst other problems.

And finally if you DO get the TT, PLEASE drop the horrible wheels and put a set of GT3 rims on it. Porsche always do great wheels, but those on the TT look like bling aftermarket items.

I chose the Ferrari! 360 Modena, f1, red/tan, daytona seats, 2,500 miles. They're giving me a "good deal" on a tubi, $3,900. They're going to perform a major service on the car in the next week and repaint the front bumper(only 3 or 4 chips)- all part of the purchase price.

I'll be posting pics when I get it, thanks.

Great choice and you won't regret; I have a 996 C4 Cab and I bought a 2002 - 360-manual last Nov- I just loveeeeeeeee it and have no fun to drive the 996 now. Planning to trade in the 996 for something else. I am thinking about an old 328 for fun or the new BMW 335i hard-top-Cab. or a CLK55, Any thought !

Quack, I promise you that you made the right choice. If you look at my profile, you'll see just a small number of the Porsche's I've owend over the past 20 years and there is not one day that I regret making the change. Porsche has become like Mercedes in that they are building for the masses. When you do that, you lose some level of not only the mystique but also the quality. Also, there won't be many an instance where you drive down the street in your 360 and pass another.

I wish you luck and hope to hear about your expeiences in the future.

congrates and good choice....having owned several ferraris including the 360 and a 997S porsche and also having driven the 997tt on several occassions, i can say that the two cars are apples and oranges...the ferrari is a special occassion, highly emotional toy...the porsche is an everyday, cold effecient beast that is also very luxurious......the porsche is much faster with the ferrari having slightly better steering and handling feel....the ferrari is also fun going slow in and the porsche not as much...another factor is that the 360 will show only slow minimal depreciation whereas the porsches tend to drop in price very quickly.........

My most recent purchase was a CS; That said - I am a dyed-in-the-wool Porsche devotee.

I love the CS and can't make direct comparisons between the two marques.

On the Porsche side I have a 997S cab, a 997 Turbo, a 996 GT3 among others. My collection starts back to the 14th Porsche built in Germany and the very first Cabriolet ever built by Porsche back in 1950.

The CS is a monster with bad manners (which is a good thing in my book!) The only negative is maintenance. If you can't afford to do it exactly as recommended - you're screwed. Prevention is expensive but will reward you with trouble free enjoyment. The Turbo is a FAST reliable, everyday car. The 997S Cab is an "every day that it is sunny car," and the 996 GT3 is a point-and-shoot piece of engineering that will never have a mechanical issue during its lifetime.

Porsches will not get as much visual attention as an F car - so it depends on your desire, and motive.

Voice of experience! Thank you. Imagine you have enough time to drive the CS or the 997TT as much as you'd like (off track). Imagine you could take wonderful trips across the USA and back. What would you take, the CS or the 997TT. You'd take the 997TT because you'd have peace of mind regarding reliability, whereas breaking down in the CS -- and being stranded -- would be a perpetual worry. That's one reason Ferrari's are driven so little; when people take long road trips, like they should to exercise their stallions, they take cars that arn't only a blast to drive but that afford peace of mind. The CS is an exotic blast, akin to riding a stallion around the track with all watching in awe. The 997TT comes close to the stallion ride, but can do it for 6-10,000 miles w/o collapsing.

really? owners don't drive their Ferrari's very much for fear of breaking down/leaving them stranded? isn't that the 80's perception of Ferrari ownership? hmm...i wouldn't venture such a guess. there have been plenty who've taken their cars on long trips... and, maybe each owner is different--prefer to drive their many cars from their stable for different purposes? some use their F-cars as daily 'beaters'...some use them on weekends, etc. given the choice between a CS or a 997tt, cross country or whatever, i'd take the CS in a heartbeat...damn the 'fear' of breaking down, damn the loud exhaust(there's always isolating headphones:)...those are things i'd gladly deal with.
