Following is a series of emails I received (I own a small dealership) from some idiot who thinks I'm an even bigger idiot! I'm playing along with him just to see how far he takes it. I've never actually seen one of these "cashiers checks" so I'm hoping he actually sends me one.

It all starts at the bottom. My responses are in between the lines. To be continued.....

    Hi,
sorry for the little delay. we were only tring to make

up our mind on the price. i am happy to tell you that
your price of $19,900 as been accepted and we are
    ready to
go ahead with the deal. I have finalized issues with
my client this morning. He has just informed me that
he is expecting a refund payment, of a vehicle that he

had earlier ordered and paid for before, but the order

was later cancelled, because when the agent who went
for the pick up of the vehicle, inspected the vehicle,

he discovered that vehicle was not in any good
condition, so he cancelled the order and he then filed

in for a refund of his money. My client intends use
this his refund to pay for this your vehicle that he
has now ordered for. And due to company policy and
book keeping, this refund payment which he is
expecting, can only be made out in this one whole
amount, that is, the full amount that he paid before
because the company policy only allows a refund
payment in one cashier check, so he has to instruct
for the check payment to be drawn to you. So he has
informed me that payment will get to you in a cashier
    check.
He is expecting a refund payment of $28,000 When
    payment
gets to you, you are required to deduct the cost of
your vehicle which is $19,990 and return his remaining

balance of $8,100 back to my customer for him to be
    able to
offset shipping charges and other commisson charges.
After all payment has reached you and balance sent
back to my client, the agent will come for pick up,
while you send other the reciept and other title
papers to my client via courier. You are required to
forward your payment information (1) name, (2)address
and (3) phone number for payment to be delivered to
    you immediately. Thanks.
    Scott

Thank you. I must say, I have had some pretty serious inquires on the vehicle this weekend and I'm afraid it will not last much longer. If your client is truly interested, I suggest he act fairly quickly.

    Regards,

    Hi,
i must thank you for thecomprehensive pics and
    detailed engine performance reports(from the
    auto-site); i think i
am satisfied with your informations so far. i only
needed it to be sure as my client's tight schedule
might not give him chance to come and see the
car(test-drive) i am about finalizing payment status
with him; he has informed me that his company is
preparing a cashier-check with which he is going to
make the payment for your car. i'll get you the
necessary details once all legal documentations are
    fulfilled. thanks.
    Scott

The guy doesn't even make much sense.

Why can't he just take that 28k cashiers check, cash it, then pay you the 19.9 for the car? Is he too lazy to do this? Is it "company policy".

I think his emails will stop once you ask him just for a normal type payment. But try to bait him and somehow turn the tables on him and try to scam him instead! :D

Yeah, that's def one of those classic "cashiers check" scams all the way. Do a quick search on here & Google and you'll turn up a ton of those types of scams. Definitely keep us posted as I find it very humorous to lead these bozos around and make them look as dumb as they are. :)

Latest....... Any thoughts about what I should send back to him in place of the $8,100 "refund"???

Thank you. It's been a pleasure doing business with you and perhaps we can do more in the future!

    Hi,
let me first of all congratulate and thank you for
honoring this deal. As an agent, it is always my joy
to see my client(s) buy great cars like yours on a
fair deal. i have just forwarded your address
particulars to my client's desk. i expect he did
address and send your check by the new week; which
implies the check should get to you by the end of that

week. now that we have gotten to the crucial stage of

payment, be sure to remove your advert from the
auto-site as the deal is being concluded. i will keep

you posted as regards the exact date when the check
would be dispatched to you.asap. thanks.

I've had these guys approach me a ton as well - never thought about getting the check sent, I just didn't pay attention. Your way is probably a lot more fun - maybe you can send him a nice glossy photo of you presenting his check to the FBI or something equally fun. Perhaps an I.O.U. written in crayon on a napkin for the $8100? You could tell him that you don't trust paper currency or bank wires and tell him to send you $3500 for shipping so you can forward him 810000 pennies?

I'll try to come up with some more fun ones that don't really take much time - after all, these Nigerian scammers aren't worth the time, but if it creates a little fun at their expense (plus the cost of them sending the fake cheque) maybe it pays off.
