As you may know, I am looking for a 308 GTS. There is a black 308GTS, with red interior for sale about 1000 miles awat from me.....Pictures look nice, not a show car, but a good driver. In answer to my questions, here's what I got back:

" I bought this car last year to resale. I do not have any owner history and very little of the service records. I do have the receipt for the 30k major service (timing belts, etc.) that was performed ~ 5 years ago.

I just purchased the parts to have another service done and, if it's not sold in the next month or so, will probably have it done. The price will be adjusted depending on if it's done or not.

The body/chassis appears to be in very good condition with no evidence of rust, prior collisions or body repair. The car was repainted just before I purchased it. A customer of mind with ties to a body shop had the car and he offered it to me with fresh paint. I inspected the car prior to repaint and other than a few door dings, the body was in good condtion but the paint was showing its age.

The car has a clear, clean, California title and runs great.

The interior is not ripped or torn but does show it's age. The carpets are faded and should be replaced.

I took the car out about a month ago and everything worked fine.

The tires are good but the wheels could be repainted. There are no bads scuffs or rash but the original paint is peeling in a few places.

This is not a show car but a good driver in good condition. I believe the 39k miles to be correct and with a little work this car could be very nice.

Thanks and let me know if you want other pictures, etc."

I realize that you'll all say that not having the service history is am issue, but it looks like this is the car that I want, Carburetted, mileage not too high, not a garage queen......black with Red interior....

He's asking 25.5K...Is that reasonable? I think that price is OK if the vehicle checks out OK, and if he includes a fresh timing belt service.

Please let me know what y'all think

    Thanks, Peter

    It needs a major now @ $4500+

I wonder what else it needs.

I'd go 22K if he does the service (and I was in the market right now).

Does it matter (on a driver) if they don't have the oil change records from 1982? No, IMO. What's the condition of the car right now? That's the important thing.

Not enough detail to the pics to judge, but here is what I see.

Seats need to be redyed at the minimum. Can't tell how bad the paint looks in person. Needs a service (plan on $4500 right there).
"Off" color, pretty, but not in demand.

Pay for a PPI and post the results. Seems priced about right, but know that you can easily dump $10k into it at this point and still not have a perfect car. All depends on what you want to do with it.

This might answer your question. Pricing's not bad, not a bargain, but if it's the color combo you want why quibble over a few K? Would you be happy in a red/tan Ferrari for a few $ less knowing you really wanted a black/red?

I realize black is a bit of an "off color", but I really like it in black. Would consider red, but that's about it. I would probably have the seats redone by a local upholstery shop that I know and does a good job for not too much money

    A few things I noted:

    - The best examples of these cars to buy are the ones that have been driven regularily. This car does not appear to fit the bill.

    - No Mention of the A/C. Make sure that it works

    - A lack of recent receipts is a big no no for me. Full service history is not essential but at least a good record of the last few thousand miles is essential in my books.

    - Paint on these cars is a huge job. Make sure that the car was stripped when re-painted. A simple spray job is a cheap fix that will not last well.

    - Car is due for a service after 5 years and it is more than just belts. Ignition, valve adjustment, hoses (when last changed), etc.

From what I see $10K in attention would make the car a nice driver not to mention your time and patience. This brings you to over $30K where you could buy a perfect, low mileage, full records car that is ready to go. Sooner or later you will have to fork out the $ so know what you are getting into. Good luck in your hunt.

The $10k of work to be done... is that by a shop or getting your own hands dirty, or a mix of both?

Just asking as with my personal abilities, I would NOT do a major myself, but I would do simple junk (assuming I had the instructions handy)....

    A bit of both.

Parts with the water pump rebuild kit are around $1600. Plus hoses, going through the brakes, cooling system, etc...

Stuff adds up as the safest way to deal with a new purchase is to go completely through it.

Looks OK, bit rough. Missing air cleaner nuts. Seats show lack of care.

Bought it to fix and sell? Hmmm.

Have someone go through it in detail.

In general you are much better off finding one that someone else has spent a fortune on and buying the best you can afford.

Definitely get a PPI. If all checks out well 25K is very reasonable with some portion of the servicing done. Go into it with an open mind towards having to spend money on it. Try and negotiate some part of the service. At least have the belts, plugs, wires and water pump done. Keep and eye on the hoses, clutch. Figure on $500 bucks to recharge and convert the A/C if all it needs is a condenser.

What type of oil filter is that? LF14... ? And is that a "sad face" ( :( ) on the filter? Usually, most folks are using UFI or Baldwin, and I don't recognize this as either... An inappropriate oil filter choice could speak negatively about the care it has received recently (i.e., technicians who don't know how to service a Ferrari).

OK, based on your comments, I think I may need to pass on this one. If it is still there in a few weeks, I may check it out and offer a lower price. I am not looking for a perfect car, but don't want a neglected car with uncertain history either.......If any of you know of a decent 308 GTS, black or red, please let me know

Tex, awesome that you're thinking about a 308, but it would be very helpful for you to figure out whether or not you want a carbureted version (76 through 79) vs fuel injected (80 to 84). The ownership experience of a 78 vs, say, and 84, can and likely will be very different. If having carburetors is not a "gotta have 'em" thing for you, I would steer you away from them and towards a fuel injected car.

Keep looking I honestly think you can do better. The best two ferrari's that I bought were recently serviced and had receipts. The worst one (that I had to put 12k into) had no receipts and no recent service.

This one has alittle higher mileage. My 308 had 91k on the clock and ran great once is was serviced. This one is in TX. Ask what was done for the recent service and get him to send some pics of the interior. http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/6/9/79801469.htm

thanks guys! I think I would really want a carburretted one, because I think I like the sound better, and prefer the car without the spoiler, and, if I would end up buying a red one, the black anodized parts. The one in TX I just found myself as well, I may check it out.....
I am also considering a QV, because I like the fact that it has more power, but again, I prefer the looks of the 78/79

Brian Keegan just offered a 85QV GTS nero/nero with 84K miles, for $30K obo. nearly perfect interior, service up to date, needs bushings and tires and has minor oil leaks from synthetic oil. As most still believe the 4 valve cars are worth more than the carbed cars, you should be able to find something pretty damned nice for $25K. I also prefer the carbed cars over anything later.

$25k for a QV car in good condition would be quite a find, no?
