I decided up upgrade to 16" wheels for my 1978 308 GTS and wanted to ask what people think the 14" wheels with new tires are worth? (I know what someone will pay). They have new tries with less than 300 miles on them. I am interested in your thoughts; I did post in the ads section and asked $800 plus shipping. Am I out of my mind? Thanks.

That sounds like a good deal to me! Why not keep your original wheels though?

A few years ago, I tried to get rid of my 14" wheels, and nobody wanted them (for free, even). Finally, I turned to a local guy that sells stuff on ebay, and he was able to sell them for over $600 (i.e., I got ~$600 after paying his fees).

That's actually not a bad price..

I buy 14"s still, as Goodyear gets me tires to fit them from Europe...

Tires themselves are such a selective judgement that I tell guys to strip them off and ship the wheels only to save the freight.

But all five wheels for $500 -750 is about right, IMO....

What tire do you get from Goodyear - some special something or other? Anything available for us commoners? I have decided (maybe??) to refinish my 14s and put a decent tire on them, but not sure what the best option is in terms of performance and looks (and of course availability)?

They found the only stock size for us WORLDWIDE is the Fulda Assuro, but it's a cool unidirectional gatorback, "V" rated.

It was pricey, to fly my five in (on three different airlines!!!), but I have the ear of the North American High Performance Manager so if I could get to some quantity "stockpiled" in USA they'd be great!

It's tough being a Goodyear guy in Ferraris these days, but it was not always so.....I'm supposed to road test these and see how they feel.....they look very nice...

Go easy and just respray them, do NOT strip the mags to bare metal, the bottom primer is a casting sealer!

OK, thanks for the info, and precaution about stripping! I sometimes shoot walnut shells on stuff when I want to go easy. I might try my spare first and see how it goes. Otherwise, just leave alone, they actually aren't all that bad.

Understand the Goodyear Ferrari thing! But, what goes around comes around...(no pun intended here).

I have been searching for 14" tire options without a lot of luck, though I found a nice 235/45/14 tire, but way too low I am sure.

Do you happen to have a link to pic of the Assuro?

    Tex,

Are the tires actually made in Fulda, Germany, or somewhere else by the Fulda company? Fulda is one of my partying towns and only about 40 minutes away from my home. A few very good brewerys there. No promises, but I might be able to drop by and help the 14inch situation. What is needed?

Big Tex -- I'm interested in buying the Goodyear/Fulda Assuros if they ever get imported here.

    Thanks,

    Tony

    Tony K,

If Big Tex can tell me if they are made in the factory in Fulda, Germany, I MIGHT be able to help.

The problem with those is they are the wrong speed rating for the car. Don't let your insurance man see those after an accident. I know of 2 companies who denied claims because they stated the car was not maintained in a safe and proper manner due to the wrong speed rated tires on the car.

Agreed, the T rated tires are only good up to 118 MPH and I should have a V rated to 149, a W to 168 or a V. However, in my defense if something were to happen I would have to going more than 118 MPH to have it make any difference and in my opinion, driving a 30+ year old car over 100 MPH is crazy. Not that I haven’t done some crazy things.

    ?????

    Why would that be crazy?

With new shocks, new tires, properly lubricated and set up, I don't see the difference between the same car when it was new and how it is now? in fact, modern tire technology makes the car run better now than it did back then.

I can assure you that my 34 year old GT4 drives excellent at 100 mph. In fact, it runs better at 100 mph than at 50. It is still going very strong at 120. It gets a bit light on the front wheels at 140 (though still very manageable), and tops out at around 160-165 mph, not because it runs out of steam, but because that's the speed it makes when you are doing 7700 in 5th gear. At that speed, you need to hold the steering wheel with two hands, but the car is still feeling pretty solid.

While I agree that 165 mph might be a bit much for this car, I really would say that up to around 140 mph there really is nothing crazy about the whole thing.

Remember: It's a Ferrari. These are built to go fast!!!

I bought my 308 QV from John Apen. It had a MINT 14 inch wheel/TRX as a spare...

It's sitting in my garage right now. She has a "correct" spare in there now incase I need it.

I didn't say it was crazy for you, just for me. If I drive a car with 118 MPH Max rated tires and one of them explodes, anything that happens to me is my fault, nobody else to blame. New cars and well-engineered racecars have component failures from time to time. I just feel that I don’t have the b****s to drive my GTS at 150+ at any time. Now my 7-year old Corvette is another story. I will run it at 170+ without a second thought because it is newer, engineered for those speeds and has new Z-rated tires. In May I will be at Texas Motor Speedway playing boy racer on the infield course with my Corvette. I ran a 1972 race prepared MG Midget for 10 years in SCCA. I am just not going to do things like that with Bob’s Ferrari.

That's the deal, this is a very rare 205 series size WITH the required V rating, DOT approval as well.....

I had Goodyear all excited but 308GTBs owners are changing to 16" rims as fast as they can...

I dunno the minimum I'd have to sell........I have a day job, you guys! LOL!

Yes as far as I know they are made in the Fulda plant in Germany they are very nice. We had a pic of it in one of the other 14" tire threads.....anyone that wants to keep 14"s will cross this bridge or spend $500 EACH at Coker Tire for Michelins....:D

You can buy them from the U.K., where they are branded as Fulda Assuros, for a reasonable price; I just don't know what it would cost to ship . . .

I learned about them a few years back with my Esprits, which also take 205/70/14, on the rear.

Is there any chance of a group buy any time soon?

Send me a PM with your info and I'll bump Goodyear on it...it took awhile for me to pay the Invoice, maybe they are mad at me....LOL!

I have three 308GTBs, so I could take 20 or so myself!
