"Long" as in a bit more than two weeks. Thought I would start here. Got a friend from Sweden coming to take a sushi class in Torrance, CA, from 18 Aug to 11 Oct. She asked me where to stay as if I would have a clue. Thoughts?

I don't have "rate" suggestions*, but if she’s not familiar with L.A./SoCal type traffic, I would recommend she'll find a place as close to her school as possible, even if it costs little more.
Commuting any distance anywhere in SoCal is just horrible pretty much 24/7/365.

I imagine online searches for extended stay hotels/motels and contacting any directly would result to some ideas/options.

I generally avoid L.A./O.C. areas like a plague, mainly due to aforementioned traffic reasons.
Other than some performing arts venues and couple of business related places, neither offer anything interesting or worthwhile for me.
OTOH, I feel same about all major metropolitan cities around globe. :p

My office is in Torrance and I live in Palos Verdes one city away. This place was good years ago when stayed there during remodel. If into the japanese things go to see main tokyo central giant japanese store on redondo beach blvd. where you can get most sushi things like sake and blue fin tuna sushi grade. If you want a quick bite go to the mini location on sepuveda has some preped food to go. A not as cool place or big as tokyo central is Nigiya that also has some good preppared foods like onigari. For a Sitdown fast food try marugame udon and for okomomiyaki go to chinchikurin. Hope that helps get you started.

I forgot since into sushi she needs to go to sakae suchi. It is a hole in the wall take out with limited menu in fact few things are raw perfect for the travel with nothing more than an ice chest or hotel frig. Order their inari and futomaki. They have unique flavor and sushi rice that is a family secret no one has been able to duplicate. Got to have a rental car. This is L.A.. Google where you are going. It is easy to end up in a bad neighborhood.
