…In a four door family sedan?

I am designing one for school and although I am a girl, I don't have a good grasp of what draws women to buy cars. Like most of you guys, I have a Vette for its performance and looks, so I don’t have much firsthand knowledge on this subject.

For those of you who have had to guide your wife/mom/daughter whatever through the selection process of a car, what was she concerned with? Safety? Standard equipment? Performance? Interior/exterior styling? If you were choosing a family car with her, what aspects of the car did you guys disagree on? I’m thinking the guy would push for performance/ styling, whereas a woman would go for safety or standard features.

Its kind of an open ended question. Any thoughts on the matter would be cool  I'm curious to see what you all think.

lol, hope your not a tigers fan, :)

well, personally, i'm a 19 y/o college guy who is into luxury sedans, i.e. bentley's and rollers. in my mind, the perfect sedan is a strong mix of luxury and power. think of the way that jaguar does their interiors, it's the way they mix their leather and wood, practically no one does it better. i would love to see a sedan with all the bells and whistles, and toys, much like what lexus is trying to do now with their automatic parking. safety is also key for me, i don't want a car that, should it ever hit the fan, won't crush me to death. sounds like a cool project, i'm sure i'll come up with more ideas as time goes by, what class is this for?

It should be very comfortable and have decent performance. Also have enough storage room for the groceries, golfbags or whatever you need to carry around. Fuel economy is another important feature. Are you currently going to CCS?

Maserati Quattroporte, no contest. Watch what happens the next time you see a Ferrari or Lamborghini parked somewhere and people walk by it. Only the guys pay attention to exotics, girls can care less and think nothing of it. The QP, on the other hand, catches their attention immediately. I'd say that more than half of the QP owners I've met or seen are women.

Women LOVE Maseratis. My girlfriend gives me **** about that all the time. She says to me, "you just want a Maserati so you can pick up chicks." To which I laugh because I know that Maseratis get more females than F-cars and Lambos, yet I don't want any more women than my woman.

Women look for - comfort, easy to get in/out of, can it fit my shopping bags?, heated seats, coffee cupholders, ease to see the front of the car, ease to see the back of the car, full visibility, just enough power necessary

Men look for - more power, 4 doors (check!, it's a sedan!), handling, styling, trunk space enough for golf clubs or a few small luggage bags for a weekend, interior amenities such as quality or 200mph speedo, bi-xenon headlights

What I look for - power, styling, quality, can it fit me?, will the ol lady still think I'm sexy if I drive it?

That being said, what luxury sedans do I like?

    Maserati Quattroporte
Mercedes E500/550 (S-class is too large)
BMW M5 or 5-series (again, 7-series is too large)
Cadillac STS (DTS is too large and old man-ish)

Bentleys Rolls, all those, I couldn't care less for the sedans. I like their 2-doors like the Continental GT and Vanquish.

Sorry but I gotta disagree. While the Maser QP is a gorgeous car in a world of lookalike luxobarges, EVERY girl I've known gets off over Jaguars. Think feminine, silky flowing lines versus slab-sided Rollers, MBs, Bimmers, etc...

    Cheers,

It should be easy to drive, something you just get it turn the key and drive. None of this 17 settings of what color you want the lights to be on the dashboard. Just get it and drive.

    Dino's right.

Gas'n'go with a cupholder not too close to the automatic transmission's "stick" - vanity mirrors - carpet, courtesy lights that turn on when remote door unlocker is activated and stays on for a few secs after she gets out of the car... and a pretty radio with a place to keep CDs. On the exterior, a smallish girlie car needs to look "sporty" without being too menacing. Performance wise - plenty of grunt in the lower gears so she can hear the tires squeal, just like she used to in Junior High.

Stylish - No one wants to be seen in a shoe box, 1980's Volvo sedan. Man or Woman.

Driveability-- Jen doesnt want to drive an old, sluggish buick type anymore then I do. Responsive and "fun" to drive, but not a challenge to drive.

Safety - For the Family factor. No one is going to buy a sedan with publicized Suzuki Sidekick safety records

Economy - Working at a Honda dealer and seeing a years worth of people trading out of their heavier V8's and massive SUV's. Gas pricing is on everyone's mind. -AND- Vehicle's Depreciation over time. Sorry Em, thats where Detroit has been losing for a long time. You can design the perfect car in everyone's mind, but if it aint worth jack-*hit in a few years, you're going to die. If you want to piss your teacher off, make sure you put an H or T logo on that car design of yours.

Ergonomics - Some people will agree with me. I think Pontiac was one of the first to do it. Steering wheel radio controls. Best thing to happen to a car since Power Steering.

You want to blow your teacher away-- STANDARD EQUIPMENT: iPod Intergration into the Radio

Emilie, I'm in the West Bloomfield area. We need good designers in the Detroit market. New designs that will get buyers away from the Japanese cars and back to American cars.
