I have been looking to buy the right 308gts qv Red/Tan and have come across a Red/Black. What percentage of 308's are Red/Tan vs Red/Black? I am also hoping that people can share the positive and negative reasons to having Black interior other than looks or heat buildup. I am on the fence and looking for a rational way to justify one or the other.

Does anyone else think this is a kind of dumb question

If you are struggling to find the ideal car with a tan interior you may have to compromise - if the car you find has a black interior but is a good car then buy it - if you really hate its looks after a while then change it either the car or the interior

Black is hot if left in the sun, but it is the easiest to maintain and "touch up" of any of the colors!!!

I would certainly go with a red/black.........oh wait, I already have one!!!

"other than looks or heat buildup."?

That's really it, isn't it? Either you like how it looks, or you don't. Either you can stand the heat, or you can't.

If I were you I wouldn't waste much time trying to rationalize a color choice. Let your emotions guide you on the decision. Save the rational thinking for less subjective things like service history. If your'e not doing kartwheels over a particular car it's probably beswt you keep looking.

Having a red/tan and a red/black I can say that red/black is hotter but easier to maintain.
Other than that I concur with JV's89; let your emotion rule.

    Agreed.

Although bottom line is buy what you want. I think tan ages nicely, unless it's redyed.

Red/tan is easier to resell. If red/tan is what you want then wait for the right car or spend a little more for it, I would not just buy any thing and change the color later, it will cost you more and you lose the originality.

With Tan, the dirty, imperfect, worn-out spot on seats stands out.

    My 2 cents.

I originally was looking for red/tan, but then came upon a red/black. In my opinion, I think the black gives it more of a "serious" sports car look. I now much prefer the black.

I've had both colour interiors. Kept the black one, as I agree it looks more sporty. The only downside is that the black floor mats show the dirt quicker. Only takes a minute to clean them though. However I do agree that the black is easier to maintain. Both colours are great. Go with the the one the runs the best, they are both great colours !!

I think there aren't much differences, the most impt thing is getting what looks best to your eye. You'll enjoy it more.

However, for differences, I'd say the biggest is probably resale value! Seems like Rosso Resale-o over Tan is still the easiest to sell.

Black would get a little warmer, but on these cars, the difference would be minimized. There isn't much glass area to start with. The rear window is small and vertical and won't take in much sun. The side windows are also small and vertical. The windshield is large and flat and takes in a lot of sun, but all the dash tops are black anyways. (Plus, it doesn't seem like these cars are usually left to bake all day unprotected in the hot sun).

Black would probably be easier to touch up/maintain. The black carpets in you average 20+ year old car are usually still pretty presentable, tan usually fairly noticeably stained/dirty.

Mine is also Red/Black. I passed on a nice Red/Tan because I like the black so much.

The black looks great against the chrome colored parts and matches the face of your gauges, etc

Get whatever turns you on, don't overthink it!

I was looking for red/tan or red/black and found my black/creme and have loved it. I didnt let color choice dictate what car I should buy - I found a good car and snapped it up and was done.

This question of “black vs. tan” interior colors really hits a nerve with me, for 7 years ago I wrestled with this exact same question.

I had told myself for years that my “perfect” 308 was going to be red with a tan interior. You know, that classic “Magnum P.I” look and all of that cliché jazz.

But, once I seriously started to look for a car to purchase, I found a red with black interior car which otherwise punched all of the right buttons. So I went ahead and got it, and lived with it for 5 years. See picture no. 1 of my car’s OEM black interior

During these 5 years, I began to notice all of the “minor” interior leather condition flaws, all unrelated to the black color, which, as time went by, started to nag away at me. So, several years ago I decided to undertake an interior re-do, and once again wrestled with this same old color question.

My major compliant, after living with the OEM black interior for 5 years, was that it was too mono-chromatic for my taste. That is, EVERYTHING in the interior was black, right down to the carpet. It felt like I was sitting inside of a coal mine.

But, likewise, I had the same sort of problem with the OEM tan interior color scheme, as it similarly is just “too much tan” for my personal taste. I don’t much care for the close-but-not-exactly tan carpet color that is OEM with most tan interior cars, for one example. See picture no. 2 of some other guy’s car which shows this clearly, and note especially his not-quite-the-same-color-shade-of-tan carpeting and lower door panels.

    So, I compromised.

I ordered new GAHH tan leather seat covers and made it a point to specify contrasting black piping. I also ordered an extra half of a tan hide that my upholstery shop used to make up new tan upper door panel inserts. But, I intentionally retained the OEM black console, lower door panels, arm rest, dash, and carpeting.

See pictures nos. 3 and 4 which shows my car’s contrasting and complimentary end result. (Note that different amounts of sun light vs. shade makes the seat colors look a bit different, one picture as compared to the other)

The resulting look is a unique one-of-a-kind two-tone black / tan interior which I really like, now two (2) years on. Every time I take the car to one of our local Ferrari shows, I receive a large number of unsolicited positive comments from fellow 308 owners of both all-black and all-tan cars who tell me that they think that mine is “the” color combination look that the factory should have done in the first place.

So, to answer your “black vs. tan” question which started this thread, my reply would be:

    “Both”!

    Cheers - DM

Buy what YOU want, not what anybody else wants. If you want red/tan then buy red/tan or you'll just regret it later.
