I figured it was time to start thinking of displaying some of my MS/Ferrari stuff and wondered how much my favorite piece was worth and what was the best way to show it off yet keep it safe.

The shirt is MS's race worn nomex top from the Monza 2000 race. It is signed with "Monza 2000" added under the name. It is in the same condition as it was when taken off after the race. It is slightly dirty but still in perfect condition. It even has some MS hair on it so if anyone wants to clone him...let me know. (kidding)

I also have the race program from the Monza 2000 race that i want to display with it as well.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

    here is a pic...

For the shirt maybe you could put it on a clothing bust like in a departmental store. If you areally insistent on keeping it untouched you can enclose it a plexiglass case. The program could be framed and hung up near the shirt.

As for what it is worth - I wouldnt think it would be worth that much monetarily (<$250) but will have great sentimental value to you.

I can't help you on values, as it's worth much more than a non-worn, signed MS shirt. At least, I would certainly think so. If you have a pic of you and MS, that would also be worth displaying with the items.

In terms of displaying it, you want to go see a reputable local framing shop that has lots of experience framing sports jerseys. It won't be cheap, as nearly everything will have to be custom made (frame, matting, etc.) - and don't skimp on the glass.

Best of luck, and be sure to post pics when it's finished!

thanks...I was thinking of going with a glass display box of sorts with a frame around it so you can see both sides. An enclosed/glassed in clothing bust might be cool.

As for the price...I was offered 600.00US a few years ago by a local collector. I just wondered if they have gone up in value or not as they are just about impossive to find a real race worn/1st place finish/signed MS nomex. To me..it's priceless no matter what it is worth on the market.

My dream piece would be a race worn MS helmet. I would sell my wife for the 2001 USGP helmet. (again...kidding) :D

And therein lies the true answer. To a collector, it was worth $600.00. To me, it would be worth more (i.e., I'd have offered more). To you, no matter what I offer, it's not enough. That said, if you want to insure it, you do need to come up with a "reasonable" market value ideally backed up by some kind of appraisal. Again, the "race worn" is the important part here - same as a helmet, gloves, shoes, etc.

One way to try to get an idea would be to see if you can't find similar items from other sports, for example, a pair of boxing gloves signed by M. Ali vs. a pair WORN and signed by Ali. The price difference b/w those two items should be at least a guage for what your item would be worth over non-worn, but autographed, MS item.

What is on the back of the top that you want to display?

I'd get it framed as per most of the football(rugby etc) tops, sort of like a t-shirt shape, but with the arms folded in. Have the programme mounted within its own area to the left or right.

maybe something like this (where the photo is) ->
    http://www.wardsauctions.com/images/framing-pics/images/0001%20-%20Bobby%20Orr%20signed%20stats%20jersey.jpg

Post up pics when you get it done.. but yes, framing isn't cheap but its good to have things out on display.

"On the market" it worth a great deal more than $ 600...

As with all "race worn" items, it's important to have some kind of "proof" that that is indeed the Monza shirt worn by MS.

Does that matter to real collectors? To some it does, to others it doesn't.

Does it matter for insurance purposes? Yes, it does.

Remember that all "collectable items" always have 3 kinds of values.

    1) When you selling and need the money on reasobably short term
    2) When you buying and you don't want to let "that one" get away.
    3) Insurance / replacement value

I have raised the question "what value are you looking for?" before here when somebody searched for the "value" of some books but there is a significant difference between these three "values".

My guess is that the shirt with the appropriate "proof of provenance" will make significantly more than $ 1000 in its current condition at the right IRL auction.

    Thanks for the info guys.

Collecting Ferrari "things" is a lot of fun.

I will post up some pics when the display is finished.

I would frame the shirt in what's called a "shadow box" style. It's a deeper frame that allows for thick pieces, like clothing. If you've ever been to a sports museum, or even a Hard Rock, you'll see pieces like that. That style would also make it quite easy to include the program under the glass. Think about having a brass plaque engraved that describes the piece. You can have those made for just a few bucks. I had some done for this item, obviously before Schumi went on his Championship run...
