I just paid $2,600 for a valve job on a set of 328 heads, no valves replaced, same old springs, all new guides, all new seals, seats cut, valves cut, and assembled. Is that now the going rate?

What were you expecting to pay? As a data point, I looked in my old records, and paid $952.76 for a similar valve job in Jan 1992 on my ex-308 heads (at Techcraft which is in your neighborhood if it's still around). With inflation (or judging by CA houses going up 4X-5X since then) $2,600 doesn't seem too crazy.

Seems a bit high if all they did was replace/ream the guides and cut seats. QV guides are not as pricey as 355 guides, how much did they charge each guide? I had a set of 355 heads done not long ago and it was just over $5k, including new valves/guides.

I was expecting under $2,000, but I don't know why I was stuck at that number. There used to be many more auto machine shops in the Bay area and they have all disappeared.

Yep, I just paid almost exactly that. I have another pair I am trying to save that need springs, valves, seats, everything and they were quoted at $5000.

There's a machine shop right next to Road Atlanta all the Ferrari shops use in the area called 'Engine Services', they are the best in the South.

The price of valvework would also depend on the type of valve surfacing being offered. I don't know what the Ferrari 3x8 factory valve surface was - single angle or multi angle? Performance valve jobs for many years were typically three-angle vs OEM single angle but four or even five angle is now quite common with different sets of angles for intake vs exhaust valves. Naturally, a single angle valve job is much less expensive than multi-angle - heck, you can do single angle at home! I'm pretty confident that a three angle valve job would be the "standard" offering from any current performance shop with 4 or 5 angle being available at extra cost. So to compare prices between different shops, the type of valve work being done has to be the same. Again, I don't know what the factory did but it would hurt me to have Ferrari head/valve work done that wasn't at least 3 angle. ;)
