Since there doesn't seem to be an active thread like this, figured I'd start one as a companion to the "What are you listening to?" thread... To kick it off... I just finished Tip O'Neill's "Man of the House" -- helluva book about the way things used to be in the big Dem machine political cities. Autobiography, so goes from his childhood through retirement with some amazing stories about Jim Curley, the Kennedys, etc... Need another good one to pick up now -- anybody got any suggestions?

Symmetry, by Marcus DuSautoy. If you are a math/engineering/finance/stockmarket type, anything that involves symmetry (Duh) or pattern recognition, I highly recommend it. Just finished On Intelligence, by Jeff Hawkins (creator of the Palm Pilot), on what makes humans intelligent and how computers should be modeled on the human brain, also highly recommended.
hey UroTrash, you a CS Lewis fan? I try to re-read Mere Christianity once a year. really, everything he wrote is brilliant
I have Mere Christianity playing on audio in the car (45 minutes each way to/from work) as we speak. Yup, he was brilliant.
''An American Life:Mellon"..by Cannadine Andrew Mellon,a banker, came to have huge holdings in MellonBank,Alcoa,GulfOil,Koppers,Carborunum,SteelCar,PittCoal to name a few. When Harding was elected in 21 Mellon took Secretary of Treasury and stayed w/Coolidge and Hoover. It's a timely read. He also bought more or less confidentially in 1930 21 paintings from the Hermitage, the Soviets needed $ badly, at a price close to $7million. Todays $equivalent would be oh 90million.The paintings included Raphaels,Titians,Peruginos,Botticellis,Velazquez,Vermeers[but no Leonardos,he didn't go for 2 at 2mil for both].The Soviets sold the art thinking they would get them back when the revolution came to the US. I've googled the names of the Soviet agents but nothing comes up,who knew. Mellon of course gave the art to the National Gallery of Art which the TreasuryDept was in charge of building. Hoover appointed Mellon Ambassador to England in 32....and that's where I am in the book[the Dems charged him with ''conflicts of interest''] when they took power in 33 but I haven't gotten that far. Wonder if Buffet would be SecTreas? cheers, RE
