Two questions: 1.) When you take your Ferrari out for a cruise in Southern California where do you go? Cruise defined as great scenery, locations, destinations, low and slow, etc. 2.) When you take the Ferrari out to wring it out or play in the twisty's where do you go? Performance drive self defined. Obviously you can do both, cruise and play on the same trip but separately where are they? Two of my favorites are to cruise PCH from South Bay up to Point Magoo, turn around and have coffee, lunch or dinner in Malibu take Sunset up to the Palisades and home via Santa Monica or 405. Or take 405 down to Seal Beach Blvd.to PCH then drive down PCH all the way to San Diego (must exit San Clemente for freeway and get off in Lucadia) To play, used to take Deer Creek Rd. but there are now too many blind curves and motorcycles, rough surface and lots of drive offs there. Back side of Palos Verdes has some nice twisty's.
all of the areas you mentioned are realllllllly highly patroled by the local PD and CHP. Sorry, I.D.K.
Good point Racer! what's left? We have these sophisticated, highly tuned exotic automobiles and not too many places to let them breath. Oh sure! you can jump on it on the occasional on ramp until you get stuck in the flow again or you can drive out to Timbuktu, maybe on the way to Mammoth on the 15 but everythings pretty much packed with mini-vans and big rigs plus radar on the ground and in the air, and it's a ca-zillion miles away. The old standbys like a Vegas run or the I-10 to Blythe are pretty much history, all the Canyons from Malibu and The Angeles Crest Highway are like the 405 most of the time. It's bad enough that we can't take our cars out to most restaurants for fear of idiot valets or take them to pick up some milk at Albertsons without apprehension of door dings or getting keyed. Personaly, I'll park the Ferrari outside of Starbucks , etc only if I can sit outside and keep an eye on it. Nothing new to owning an exotic but definitely confining. So, I guess we must be satisfied with a cruise up or down the coast or to C&C on Sat. mornings......hey, that ain't all bad, at least we can do it all year round and it is for the most part beautiful. But isn't it ironic that we live in the very center of car culture and were all dressed up with no place to go.
There is this unreal road south of San Diego that goes due east.. I forgot the name its been more than 10 years since i have driven it. Look over the cliff and all you see is cars at the bottom that didnt make it. The road goes for about 60 or 70 miles east from the 5 freeway.. Anyone know the name?? JJ
John Corbani posted some great road tour info for Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114426 http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109267 If you haven't read any of John's many posts in the 206/246 forum, you've missed out on some good stuff. He's the gent who has owned his daily-driver Dino for over 20 years & has logged the lion's share of the nearly 190,000 miles on the clock! "ELIM" (Elliot) from Redondo Beach posted this video footage of a Carpinteria-Lake Casitas run earlier this year. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114031
Just wanted to give every one a heads up and this was pointed out by a very cool fellow Mini owner, every one knows him. So, Our good buddy with the mini gave us the 411 and how law enforcement watches local forums, seeing Where, when, how and who is going on a drive. Last time as it was pointed out by this fellow mini owner, the local ********** agency printed out the thread and there was mention in the morning's briefing rooms about where and what time to be in a particular area to nab as many people as possible for what ever reason, So as much as there are a lot of fellow enthusiast who enjoy going for a drive, just dont post up the place, and the other reason for that is some people do not posses the skills for driving on certain roads and will eventually have some sort of mishap and leads the hounds to the spot and basically burn it for everyone.
Just do counter intelligence and refer to subject roads with opposite or different road names as to divert the focus of our local law enforcement. MM
Good points guys, never thought of the clandestine eyes watching. This only pertains to one part of the original two questions, hopefully, you can still take a nice scenic cruise somewhere in the Southland without pushing the envelope to extremes. What ever happened to the simple spur of the moment Sunday drive? There is still something cool about just taking some road some where with no itenery and the sense of discovery. John's areas do look amazing.
My blog has a few (I have a ton more to ad) http://wideopentraveler.blogspot.com/2006/06/honeymoon-gto-and-back-roads-of_26.html
