The current stockpile before the fall harvest ... some pretty interesting stuff if you look closely. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That is a pretty amazing stockpile. I'm going back and forth right now between Four Roses Small Batch and Blade & Bow
Thanks. Not sure why it's resizing the pic ... if anyone cares to take a closer look here's the pic link: https://i1052.photobucket.com/albums/s444/soulsea1/Random/IMG_4806_zpsn868leen.jpg
I know not much but it looks like only 3 bottles there have been open. Need to be moving on my friend, fall is here already.
Ha, three bottles currently open ... many have perished since last fall. I also have the daily stuff I drink, usually McKenna and like some of the stuff I posted before.
Very underrated bourbon, have a couple toasted in the cellar and will need to hit up my spot to see if they have any of these in
Local place had this. Thought I’d give it a try. Never heard of it before. About $40. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Get your single malts before prices go up. Could be up 25% on 10/18 if increases are passed to consumers.
Of the three Nikka bottles, the Nikka Whisky from the Barrel would be my choice. They are all pretty good; Yoichi and Miyagikyo are their two malt varieties, so they have differing flavor profiles. Mid-range, pretty good, and not too expensive. The Barrel is 102 proof, and gets very good reviews. I've had the other two, and have a Yoichi in the pantry right now. I enjoy Nikka's Super Rare, which is more like they made it years ago. The stronger Barrel strength is a departure for them, one worth trying out.
No, the Yoichi is a blend of several years, usually 8-15 years depending on the flavor profile the distillers are working to match. It is pretty good, comparable to a lot of other quality blended, American, Irish or otherwise.
Just picked up a bottle of Talisker 57 North from duty free en route home from Canada. Cask strength (114 proof). Peat smoke, nutmeg, and salt air on the nose, a little astringent to me. On the tongue, smoke, pepper, oak, and spice notes. Pretty good finish, light peat, long and peppery (not a bad thing, it feels like heat that is different from the spice oak gives to whisky). Not bitter at all, and the phenol isn't there on the tongue or finish. You could cut it with water down to 84 proof, but I think you'd lose some of the complexity. Better to pour it, let it rest a few minutes to get some air, and then take it in slowly to enjoy the complexity. Talisker is a Skye whisky; whiskies from there aren't a brutish as Islay bottles, but which have the sea air, tar and peat in really manageable proportions IMHO.
That's a different story...Nikka stopped producing their age statement whiskies in 2015, and finding bottles of any of the 10, 12, 15 or 20's is pretty tough. The 15 is worth holding on to if you're interested in the resale market. I've seen it anywhere from $600-1,200 online. I have a Yamazaki 18 I bought several years ago for $125 that is now $680 and up, a Nikka Taketsuru 17 my wife gave me that is at the same price, and a Hibiki 17 Plum Cask that isn't sold in the USA I purchased in Japan for around $80 that would be more than a grand if I put it on the market. The prices for age-statement whisky in general is rising pretty steeply & the Japanese brands are rising even more quickly.
