As Bruce said, ALL batteries will leak eventually, so that is why it is not a good idea to leave batteries in a device that is rarely used. The "general purpose" and "heavy duty" batteries are the older zinc carbon technology and they will leak much more easily, and quickly than a alkaline cell. Another reason to only buy alkaline cells. Not only do they typically last longer in use, but they are more resistant to leaking, have better storage life, and work in a wider range of temperatures. All good attributes.

Ike, take off both ends of that mini-mag light and try to push one of the cells out...once you can identify the manufacturer, package up the mess and send it to them. I did this to my old employer Duracell, after I had some 5 year old batteries leak in a 4 c-cell maglite(years after I left Duracell). They sent me a check to cover the cost of the flashlight AND my postage (about $30; and I only paid $16 for the maglite!) and gave me a wad of coupons for free batteries. I made out REAL good on that deal.

The companies will make good on their warrantees. When I worked for Duracell, some guy locally in Seattle, had a flashlight leak on the back seat of his BMW. Duracell paid out $2k to have his rear seats redone in leather at the local BMW dealer. We never did figure out if he did this intentionally or not....but he made such a big stink with the local Fred Meyer retail chain; that we took care of it right away...didn't want such a huge customer mad at us for not coming through for THEIR customer.
