I bought a car that has a built-in radar detector, but I can't tell what brand/model it is even after searching a bit. I suspect it's too old to be of value, but curious what it is anyway. Can anybody identify it from the pictures below?

The first picture is the sensor in the front bumper and the second is the control (the knob in the middle with the red stripe):

PS Sorry for typo in the thread title, should be "built-in".

    I think that is a front mounted laser jammer. Seen also on this Lexus;

Thanks for the feedback. I would have never guessed it was a jammer. Still can't find anything about it when I search for laser jammer though. Any idea what brand or model it is?

Amazing Robert! I could not find anything on this -- and K-40 was the first thing I searched for because it was the only built-in radar brand I knew, but I still couldn't find any info.

From the documents in your link, it looks like it's the LD5500 model. I don't think I would use it as a jammer, but it would be cool to use as a laser detector (which I assume wouldn't be as prone to false alarms as regular radar detector). The control knob is "off" in the center and turns on when clicked either left or right -- my guess is that one of those positions is "detection only" and the other is "detection and jamming". I need to look at the documents a bit more -- I didn't see anything showing how the control works when I skimmed the manuals, but should be easy to find now that I know the model number.

Thanks very much for your help!

Have you located the warning led somewhere on the dash or piezo alarm hidden behind a vent?

Yes, there are 2 LEDs embedded in the hazard switch surround and it sounds a bit like R2D2 during start-up when I turn it on. They tried to make it a very stealth installation so none of the controls or LED's are labeled. I don't know what the individual LEDs mean either -- but I should be able to find out now that you've identified what it is.

You might try using a laser pointer aimed at the thing to try and set it off and determine which led is laser ?

Or a infra red remote control, no idea what frequency will work.

The K40 has both a front and rear radar sensor. One LED is for the front and one LED is for the rear. The larger outer ring knob turns the unit on/off. Off is the center detent. Rotating the outer knob to either the counter-clockwise or clockwise detent turns the unit on. One is the sensitivity for city the other for highway. The smaller inner knob is the volume control.

Laser pointer won't work. Try a golf range finder.

Thanks Brian, this is really helpful. I went through all 4 K40 docs and none of them show anything about the controls. Makes perfect sense that the second LED is for the rear. I hadn't noticed a sensor in the rear of the car, but will take a look for it tomorrow.

You are correct Joe, it's a 996. I bought my wife a 996 C4 back in the early 2000's and she loved that car. We later replaced it with a Maserati, which she also loved but didn't really drive that much. The Maser was red, which looked great but was not very low key and I think was part of the reason she didn't drive it a lot. She was always commenting how much she liked her old 996, so I took the hint and got another one. It's almost the same color as our old C4 ("Ocean Blue Metallic" vs "Lapis Blue") and the same interior color (Savanna Beige), so it's like a time warp to have the 996 again.

What surprised me is how much I love the new car. Our old one was a 2001 C4 with Tiptronic and, although it was a great car, I didn't really enjoy driving it all that much because the automatic takes all the fun out of it. The new (to me) 2000 996 has a 6-speed and 2wd and it feels like a completely different car than the C4 Tip. It fees light and responsive like a vintage car, but still has all the comforts of a modern car. She loves the "new" 996 and adapted to the 6-speed with no issues.

Robert, Brian and Spiro seem to be the specialists. Accordingly, what are your radar/laser detector/jammer recommendations? Anything new?

I don't have any experience with the current generation of K-40 units but I can tell you that system in your car is junk. Just over six months ago I purchased an '01 996tt that has the same system and it goes off all the time for everything. I do know that the rear sensor works because when a newer car with adaptive cruse approaches it goes off. I have only had it go off one time for a legitimate police radar trap. I can't believe they got $2,000 for those systems 15 years ago.

Thanks Chris -- that helps a lot. From this document, it looks like mine might be a radar detector rather than a laser diffuser. Does your unit have the same shape sensor as shown in the pic in the first post?

Yup its just a detector. I have the front and the rear sensors, exactly like your pic.

Thanks. I'm happy it's just a detector, not really a fan of using a jammer personally. I'll have to try it out on the road and see how it works I suspect my unit is pretty old at this point, so I don't know how well it will work on modern radar/laser.

I like the perfomance of mine. I do wish it would have band lockout like my Escort dash unit has. I turn off everything except Ka band for the CHP units here in So Cal. The beeping does get irritating from automatic doors etc. for the longest time I couldnt find my controller knob. Its tucked up under the dash! Lol
