We broke our old digital camera, and so we're shopping for a new one. Our last camera took great shots but was a little slow. We want something that takes good shots but is faster on the draw, and fairly compact. I know these are pretty broad statements, but can anybody recommend a good durable digital camera with these traits for $500 or less?

Panasonic DMC-LX3.............without question the best Point-and-Shoot out there today. Usually well under $500.00

Very high quality body, Leica f2 Summicron 24-60 zoom lens which takes spectacular images, 10.1 mp, variable aspect ratio, 3" LCD,....... & shoots video. Outstanding low-light performance, extrememly user-friendly and intuitive to operate, very good color fidelity, excellent images up to ISO 400-800. Higher ISO is available but gets noisy and grainy......as they pretty muich all do.

Only downside: No optical viewfinder. On the other hand, the image on the LCD screen is adequately visible at quite an angle and you may find that you don't really need an optical viewfinder at all. If you feel you must have one, get a used Leica M series 24mm external viewfinder and slide it into the hot-shoe. ( usually available for under $ 200.00)

    You won't be disappointed.

If that suggestion and camera one doesn't do it for you, I'd suggest trying to find a left-over new or excellent used Canon G-9 ( avoid the G-10 successor, higher pixel count -- 14+ vs. 10.3 in the G-9 --but lower image quality ). G-9 is not as portable as Panasonic ( fatter and heavier ) and has more features, but not as durable and image quality not as high as Panasonic / Leica.
