at WWC in Spring Valley, NY on a 348? Someone told me that an oil change at the dealer costs $500.00. Is that true?

Unfortunately, probably true (if they charge $15/qt and $75 for the filter + a couple hours of $100+ labor), but can't WWC give you a direct estimate?

    If the oil is $5/qt retail (and the shop charges you $10/qt), then maybe ~$300 is typical (high) retail ($110 oil + $50 filter + $5 washers + 1.5 hours @ $75/hr = ~$275).

Sodacom's has some very reasonable prices IMO (and one-stop shopping) for the 348 oil filter ($25) and the sump drain washer ($0.58) {I didn't see the oil tank drain Cu washer, but I'm sure they'd have it too} if you want to try it yourself (and are good price references -- e.g., if a shop wants more than 2X those numbers I'd walk). So with $2/qt non-synthetic oil, the minimum DIY project is something like ~$60 parts + 2 hours of your labor + the disposal hassle.

Should those washers be changed during each oil change? Also, does it really take 1.5 - 2 hours to change? From what Ive read all you have to do is pull out the sump plug and the reservoir plug, drain oil, swap the filter, replace plugs, and refill. Is there something I am missing?

Yes, the Cu washers should always be replaced -- they are in a fully-annealed "soft" state when new and are strain-hardened after being "crushed". Reusing an old one as-is usually works OKish in most places (but never do this on a high pressure fuel connection), and if you re-anneal (and clean-up) an old one they can be reused safely, but that's way more hassle/$/time than just getting a fresh handful IMO.

The time estimate was my opinion of the time a shop might charge (not necessarily the fastest possible actual time to do the job), and for a DIYer I'm including: hassling to get the parts, getting in and out of your grubby clothes, getting the car up and down, disposing of the oil, etc.. I'd agree that a ~1 hour labor charge by the professional would be more fair, but they've been known to abuse this ;). People have reported here having a good relationship with their local "quicky lube" place where they bring the F parts and pay a more reasonable labor charge, but I still believe the going "retail" price is in the $300 range.

I disagree with pulling the resovoir plug. Pull the whole bottom plate from the resevoir -- leave the main plug in place -- and replace the tank gasket. It's messy, but it prevents accidentially stripping the threads on the (fairly soft) plate.

    YMMV

I was just about to post this.

If the large center plug strips then you only option is a helicoil or a replacement part.

Use a putty knife on the gasket to keep it from splitting or tearing.

Becareful putting it back on. Do not over tighten the 4 bolts holding the cover on.

I recently had the oil changed on my 348ts at Kwik Kar Oil & Lube Center for $34.99. They even washed the windshield and vacuumed the car out. Might be worth shipping your Ferrari to Amarillo for the cost savings.

Matteo -- That gasket only costs like $2.00. I've just ordered a new one from Sodacoms rather than screw around with the old one. I'd say scrape if off (carefully, so not to scratch the metal), and put a new gasket in place.

Husker - what did Quick-y-lube say about removing all the underbody panels? How did you ensure they would dump engine oil, and not tranny oil? And most importantly, how was the coffee?

Husker -- I, too, am interseted in what "training/info" you had to provide, or perhaps one of the principals/managers is an experienced exotic gearhead, etc..

And what about the parts? If they have an equivalent for the 348 oil filter can you give the brand/PN?

I just recieved a flyer from WWOC a few days ago. My wife and i shared a laugh looking at the prices as we threw it out!
Im going by memory but i think thier "special" for 8 cylinder cars was $399. This also included checking other basic fluids and brakes. Yawn...
Now the kicker is that this was for regular oil. Synthethic was extra. And I believe Shell Helix was more still.

Sometimes perhaps, you need a specialist, an oil change is not one of them....

I know the manager of the Kwik Kar Lube Center. He ordered the filter and called me when he had it in. I just handed him over my owners manual and he took it from there. Nothing very complicated. Many cars have panels that need removing. No big deal. I suppose he COULD have tacked on an extra $15 or $20 for learning, etc., but I think he really takes pride in the fact that I would bring my Ferrari to him. He gives it the total "white glove" treatment.

As a side note, it has been my experience that, for light mechanical, the smaller "mom and pop" shops are much more careful (and thorough) than the big-shot "dealer" shops. I don't know this to be scientific fact, but rather just my experience.

I am always amused at these ding-a-lings that will fork out $500 for some "official" jerk just to change out their car oil. And they boast about it like it's a badge of honor or something.

Their coffee sucks. I had to run next door to Phillips 66 and get a hot mocha. Add $1.18 to my total.

Not $500 at WWoC. Should be around $250. Watch for their winter special.

    Around $325 at FoCNJ.

DIY and it should cost much less. $30 (filter + washers) + $60 (Mobile 1 synthetic red cap) = $90. You can get all the parts from WWoC or FoCNJ.

Do a search there are plenty of old threads on do-it-youself oil change for the 348.

    Goodluck.
