1998 M3 with 50,000 miles, white ext, black leather int, 2 door, 5 speed - dealer serviced and loaded

    or

1998 540i with 50,000 miles, black ext, tan leather int, 4 door, auto - dealer serviced and loaded.

Also which is the better and more likely deal?

    The M3 at $21k Canadian

    or

    The 540i at $16k Canadian

I'm pretty sure I can buy both car at those prices.

    Thanks

The 540 is a fantastic car, and would be my choice over a US spec E36M3.

    But I like the bigger bimmers, I drive an 88 750 :)

Given similar condition, the 540 is the better deal. That said, I'd still take the M3.

Do you have any more information/pictures on the E36?

There was a bit of a snag on Friday so I'l see the car again on Monday or Tuesday. I'll snap photos and run the VIN's of all the cars I'm interested in.

I don't know why I thought it was an auto but the 540i is a 6 SPEED.

It needs brake pads on all four wheels and my current boss knows this car inside and out, so it is in great mechanical condition.

I'll have any car I buy in the shop and up in the air. Thanks.

    Anything else for either car?

That 540i is the one I am buying. I just can't pass it up. A mint condition service history with a 6 speed, 4 door, beautiful shape and loaded... how could I pass that up for 18k?

    Thanks.

Good choice! The 6-speed is a totally different story. Awesome sports sedan period.

If everything goes well, I'll be smashing it in... AHEM! I mean breaking it in in two days, maybe three.

Quick question: Wouldn't the M3 hold it's value much better than the 540? Even if they're smashed, the M cars still fetch a large price.

M replacement parts are not cheap and are harder to get simply due to the lower production volumes.

    5 series cars are plentiful......and a 540 6 speed is one heck on a road machine. It's a poor man's M5 IMHO.....and that's not a negative comment.....!!!

Thanks anyway {I forgot to check it out} I replaced it for $200.00 do no big deal. Oil and coolant were switched out too.

    Thanks guys.

Yea the radiator neck and oil pump getting loose bolts are the only real 'chronic' issues I have seen with those engines. Oh, and later examples also had a tendency of eating VANOs...

When you can pull the oil pan and make sure the bolts are tight (if on at all! They fall into the pan and make rattling noises).

I'll check the oil pan out, thanks.

    P.S. It's a kick ass car.
