I have just had the HT leads on my 328 replaced after the garage servicing the car discovered that one of the leads for the front bank of cylinders was virtually burned right through and others were singed. The damage to the leads was rather alarming. Is this a common problem or could be be a symptom of some other issue?

It usually happens when the cable clips on top of the cam covers are broken (or the lead(s) come out of the clips) & the long leads (especially to #7 & #8) fall down on top of the exhaust.

Just make sure the clips are all in tact & that the leads are properly clipped into them & you should be fine. If necessary you can get replacement clips
