After 3 weeks, I have my new to me Testarossa back from the shop. The car runs smoothly, and started this morning quite well, so I'm a happy camper.

In going over the bills for the Major, water pump rebuild, and so on, I noticed a few things that I'd like comment upon.

    1. At 17,800 miles, the mechanic didn't think that the fuel filters or air filters needed replacing, although he did replace the fuel lines, and fuel tank vent lines, and some heater pipes, freon in A/C, tensioner bearings, cam belts, etc. Mistake? Or ok?

2 The mechanic also said that three out of four undertray brackets were broken, and they had to weld those back in place under the car. What would cause that to happen? The last two local owners were mature, non racing type owners. Neither the mechanic or the service manager thought there was much out of the ordinary here.

Otherwise, the engine is apparently a strong performer, very solid, and the mechanic could find no evidence of any ham fisted mechanical work, which he probably didn't know was because the Los Gatos Ferrari guys did the work on the car when they were still Los Gatos Ferrari. Maybe Rifledriver worked on this one sometime in the past, who knows?

Anyway the car is home, started, the ECU malfunction seems corrected, and now I'm too sick to actually get out and drive today. Hoping the sunshine holds up a few more days, although rain is expected!!

The undertray brackets break due to vibration of the undertray and break on all TR's. If welded they will just break again, complete waste of time. They need a redesign to work.

What is the prev owners name?

Original registration on 2/28/88 to Ron and Janice Dorst (he is/was a Doctor locally in California. I don't want to put any more info about him in the internet without his permission.

On 2-21-99 John Thorpe purchased the vehicle.

On 1-26-06 I purchased the vehicle.

All purchases were done through Ferrari of Los Gatos and its successor.

Ben Shamlou shows as the service advisor in 04 (now in Las Vegas at Lamborghini, I am told) Angelo Orciuoli did some work in May of 02.

William ??? signed off on 4/4/89 on the free service coupon, but the balance of records are on receipts, not in the book.

Tires were sourced out in 2002 (Pirelli 800s) and battery in 2004. Not sure who else at LG Ferrari might have worked on it. It would be fun if one of them was you.

I know the car and orig owner quite well. He is a surgeon and a long time Ferrari owner. Spared no expense but drove them little. I was there when he traded a 16k mile C4 for it.

The car and owner used to live in a French Chateau that was taken apart and moved to Ca.
He lived 2 doors down from one of my best friends when I grew up.

My mistake. Just realized different Dr.

    Never mind.

Too bad it's the wrong person. What a romantic provenance for this Testarossa that WOULD have made. Thanks, Brian. Sounds like you didn't work on it....

When do you think the fuel filters need to be changed assuming I'm running 91 octane California unleaded gasoline?

    Hi Larry-

My TR is in for a major right now also (is pretty much done & should be ready to pick up on tomorrow). A few of my undertray brackets are also broken. Per my mechanic, this is VERY common on TR's.

As Rifledriver said, the vibration breaks them.

My mechanic (Ferrari Tech in Orange - His name is Larry also) was going to weld some brakets on there that should be more vibration resistent.

Just a bad design & nothing to worry about.

Some of mine are broken too. Has anyone worked out a solution for this problem? Or is it a case of just keep welding them up when they break?

The brackets are kinda "U" shapped and seem to fail where they attach to the body. Could be that the load is perpendicular to the weld and the material is like 0.075 thick. I made some "L" shapped brackets and a captive nut out of 0.125 material (with a nice radius bend) and they are holding up fine for two years now. There is a surprising amount of flex in the chasis so make sure the mounting holes are centered over the retaining nuts. I replaced mine because I had weld on top of weld and heat affected zone on the bracket makes the material weaker. YMMV
