I am leaning towards a tan interior with black daytona seats. I'm also leaning towards something so boring as black exterior! What do you think?

Sounds like a winner, plus it's original. Slam dunk, IMHO.

Nah, can't do that. I'm ok with the paint but the interior isn't going to happen. Black with non daytona seats?

I suppose the interior is easier to change.

I'm a fan of black carpets, whatever else you do. Maybe cream/black Daytona seats. But if it was my car/wallet I'd stay original.

I would go with the white with an 'appropriate' red (burgundy, whatever) interior of your choice, black carpets. Extremely elegant, easy to care for, cool.

My two cents.... stay with the original color of the car based on its vin #. Again, I am a traditionalist.

I personally don't understand this view. I don't get 'why'? It's not the same car it was back then, it has no ties to that color, I have no ties to that color. Just doesn't make any sense. Staying period correct does though.

That would be nice as well.

Curious if none of the 250GTO's are original paint why so traditionalist?
    Not critical just asking.

    Drew,

Tough question and a tough decision. Color is so personal and emotional. I thought about color for almost 2 years before deciding. I would check what color it was originally, I don't believe Bleu Chiaro was offered on the Dino. If you would find out it was Bleu Sera originally I would paint it that with tan inside. Otherwise White could be really unique, don't believe I have ever seen in person a White Dino. It would stand out at any show. Black and tan would be very dramatic. My car was that combination for many years. Black goes well with the Dino interior because of the dash, console, sills, and door tops are in black. The only issue with black is in my opinion it tends to 'hide' some of the beautiful form the Dino has. Let me know if you what to see my Grigio Ferro Dino for reference, I'm in South Orange County.

    All the best,

    Tom

Thank you Tom for the thoughtful reply. I would love to see your car in person. Pics of your car are what got that color on the short list!

Talking Drew into white is kind of like talking a poker player into a trip to Vegas.

    I'd agree on blu sera.

There is no doubt, I know, that I am the only voting for this, but Viola is an awesome color and something completely different. That is my vote.

Well... build records and color data are only going to become more available over time. So, that build color will be part of its history and there will always be an asterisk next to the car if/when it changes hands. It's either restored to original spec, or it isn't.

Whether that's important to you is up to you.

During the two-years-and-counting resto of my Speedster, we were able to find the original engine and save all the numbers-matching body panels, so at some point originality became a bigger deal to me. Instead of being a "just get the thing back on the road" endeavor, it became a sort of mission. I wasn't born when the car was made, but my goal is now to experience what it would have been like to have owned it from day one. Stripping 7 coats of paint, and consulting with a researcher who had access to Reutter build records, we confirmed the original colors and I opted to stay true to them. There's also a history of 356 painters doing every car they find in resale black or resale red, so there's a dreary sameness to much of the population -- like a row of red/tan 360s or 308s. It also helped that I love the original colors of my Speedster, so I didn't agonize over it.

Some of it is down to philosophy. Ralph Lauren has color-changed some of his cars, and they're worth multiples of what ours are, so there's a "do what you want" argument to be made.

If I were doing a 246, blu sera would be at the top of my list. I think red and black aren't the knockout colors on it, and I tend to like black on everything, and buy too many black cars for any sane person. If it were my car, I'd confirm the original color and consider that first. If it's a color you dislike, then the world won't end if you change it. But there is a tie there -- a bit of history.

    My two pence...

Good luck. Hard to go wrong with a 246.

Sorry to be a poo-butt. I am on a mission to fully document and return my car to "factory" originallity. However, I respect anybody's decision to change colors... It is there car and they can do what they want. Dinos are beautiful... just do not do Lambo "finger nail paint" colors. ps: the white Dino with daytona seats was really sweet!
