I was told by Ferrari specialist to always disconnect battery when car was to be used for more than a few days.....have done so and no probs in 15 years in damp UK.....

    Your right!
I recently had the skin on the front clamshell from my BB off the frame for some repairs and was horrified to find bare steel on bare alloy.
There is absolutely NO attempt from the factory to insulate the two dissimilar metals.
A little bit moisture, a little bit of alloy and steel and the corrosion cocktail is a certainty.

Ok, that goes for BB's, what about TR's?

Pretty sure I read the 550's used a special tape...

Not sure if the Testarossa door shells, hood and decklid inner structures are steel or aluminum but have aluminum panels. Different design than a boxer because of the steel tubing the skins wrap around vs stamped structures like a modern car. Regardless, Testarossa doors corrode around the side strakes, the little air foils in the doors including the TR line. Saw a 94 last week that had some serious corrosion on the outer surfaces.

Yeah I tend to do that in winter if the roads are salty and it`s not going to be used for a few weeks.

When doing the engine out I removed the wheel arches which I think are alloy - and everything was either coated or primered where they bolt on.

I think they must have taken some measures elsewhere on the car to stop the reaction otherwise all Testarossa`s would look like 30 year old Range Rovers with bits hanging off!

You`re always going to get some reaction though eventually but I think the Testarossa does damn well for an old Italian supercar.

Anybody else have further input on this regarding TR/512/M?

Restorers use some sort of special polyurethane tape.

Was galvanic corrosion really a issue on an 512 that is taken care of and doesn't see winters? I have had two 512's so far, a 512TR and now a F512M and I have not seen any evidence of this on my cars. But they are kept spotless, don't see snow and are never put away wet...

I too am curious what Ferrari did where the two different metals touched...
